The "HOLY FUCK MARYLAND DEATHFEST WAS SOOOOO AWESOME ARGHHHHHH" Thread

Hopefully I can get some friends to stay in a hotel with me. I'll have to see, one year of mental stability will hopefully be enough to stay a weekend about 30 minutes from my house.

MDF kicked ass except getting in a huge ass car accident outside of Washington PA. Fucking hell.

Oh and someone needs to post the video of Grant being drunk and air-guitaring to Soulside Journey.

I assume that he stopped doing it after "Cromlech" since it's apparently the only good song on the album and the rest of it fails to develop beyond that song and recycles riffs from it. ;)

He was in a similar state on the couch when we played A Blaze in the Northern Sky and he appeared to be possessed by Satan.

...I've got no response to that.

Zeph-->Oh, that was even better, because he was only hitting the hi-hat. I assume he didn't want to spill his beer that was in the other.

Maryland Deathfest Tickets: $115
Bottled Water: $3
Searching through hordes of CDs to find a stack of 15 that you had to have: $150
Watching Grant air-drum to A Blaze In The Northern Sky: Priceless.

That was stupid but whatever.

Best bands (in order): Bolt Thrower (I'm still amazed by their set and plan on marrying the bassist soon), Immolation, Destroyer 666, Asphyx, Aura Noir, Absu, Sigh, Atheist, Devourment, Mayhem. I missed a shitload of inside bands because most of my weekend was spent either keeping front row middle at the outside stage or in the merch room.

I met and talked to a lot of you, which was enjoyable as you were all very nice/cool. Me and Yoda/Michael will most likely stay in the room next year. Matt/Dodens didn't beat the shit out of me when I talked to him, and was actually really nice.

Fun times included going to 7/11 with Andy at like 1 AM and seeing some interesting people on the way there, hanging out in the hotel room a couple of times, complimenting some guy on his Slaughter- Strappado t-shirt and subsequently hearing 20 minutes of stories about him and Will Rahmer in the early 90s, falling in love with Jo-Anne from Bolt Thrower, eating lots of junk food and sweating it all off during the show, Grant's drunken Darkthrone antics that made me laugh like a little girl, etc.

I don't see myself not going next year as it was pretty fucking amazing overall.

He was one of those guys pushing 40 who apparently did tons of photographing back in the 90's, which makes sense as he was taking photos Saturday. It was totally fucking hilarious when he started talking about how he couldn't get into black metal (the subject arose when he saw my Burzum shirt) because of how the guys from "Wimperor" would run away from morons trying to start fights whereas Will Rahmer would just fuck people up.

Yeah, I pretty much randomly saw Guy and went up to him and said you have to come to my hotel room right now and get this fucking record out of my room already (I sold him the Sanctuary record). And yes, I was cool and nice.

Here's the start:
Day 0 (May 21st, 2009)

We left Seattle at 10 PM on May 20th on an oversold flight with a change over in Detroit. I got to my hotel in Baltimore at around 9 AM. Fortunately they had some empty rooms so I didn’t have to wait around for the 4 PM check-in time. Once everything was unpacked we set out in search of alcohol and food. Within one block we found both a grocery store and a liquor store.

The liquor store (Urban Cellars Fine Wines) had a sign saying “Welcome Deathfest” in the window. We bought 2 pints of Absolut (to drink at the fest) and a fifth of cheap vodka to make kamikazes and bloody marys with along with a six pack of Grolsch. The grocery store supplied some donuts and milk. We took our provisions back to the hotel, ate some food then set off walking. Our destinations were Edgar Allan Poe’s grave and his Baltimore house/museum.

Our first mistake on this trip was not bringing along a map to get to our tourist attractions. Once we thought we had gone too far we took a bit of a detour and started asking the locals where Poe’s house (on Amity Street) was. We probably spoke with a dozen people and none of them had a clue, they just kept directing us to his gravesite despite us specifically asking where his house was. We were finally given proper directions by an older man with a nasty set of track marks on his arms. For this bit of information he was rewarded with a cigarette.

On the way to Poe’s house the neighborhoods started looking bad. Rows of brick row houses were the norm, about 50 percent occupied and the rest boarded up. Garbage was everywhere and the only sounds to be heard were occasional shouts and the thumping of rap music bass. Despite the lower standard of living in this particular area everyone we spoke with was kind and pleasant. At least it seemed that way; it could have been the result of 24+ hours without sleep. When we finally got to Poe’s house we were greeted with a sign saying it was closed. At least we found out where it was so we could visit later.
