The new Exodus album totally kicks ass.

Well, I heard "War is my Sheppard" and it absolutely ruled. Then I heard another song, and it wasn't really as thrashy as I like Exodus. Heavy, but leaning towards hard rock. I dunno.

The only drawback is that it's lyrically very lame. Not that I put much stock in lyrics, but the whole "not so clever" play on words is never a good idea, and even a worse one over and over again. That said, any damage done by the lyrics is offset by Zetro, who gives his best performance ever.

Can I just use this thread quickly to talk about Dark Angel? I gave Darkness Descends another try the other day, and I still say bleh. I mean, no tempo changes whatsoever, and thrash should thrive on that IMO.

Carry on.

No, you've got it all wrong. Thrash is about playing 2/4 beats as fast as you can (but not being particularly good at your instruments) and screaming about riding motorcycles, playing thrash metal, attending thrash metal concerts, drinking beer, banging heads (and/or women,) merciless death, death by hanging, certain death, thrashing 'til death, curses of the legions of death, and occasionally how fucked-up this society is. Then you gotta have shouted gang choruses for emphasis on words like "DEATH!" (Heathen,) "YOUR WIFE!" (Exodus,) "THRASHERS!" (Death Angel) or "DEATH!" (Dark Angel.) You can mix that up with falsetto screams here and there also (Life becomes your FIIIIIIIIINE!)

That's a brilliant description, heh. Thing is, I like my Thrash to sound very structured and yet stylish. I like the "technicality of the Germans, and the flair of the Brazilians". Most people will tell you that Kreator's Extreme Aggression is a work of art, but guess what? I prefer Violent Revolution. I know you like Sepultura's Bestial Devastation but I prefer Arise. The difference being, VR and Arise fluctuate between one song and the next.

I still like "...And Justice for All", "Practice What You Preach" and "Time Does Not Heal" so don't take the above all that seriously, but there's just something special and very honest about, for example, Brazilians who hardly know any English at all making the most extreme music they could come up with by screaming "ANTICHRIST! ANTICHRIST! ANTICHRIST!" over four horribly produced power chords and 1/1 drum beats and then releasing it with a poorly drawn cover and nearly comical logotype and a band photo in which they wear all metal objects they could find in Mom's kitchen utensils drawer. It's so honest and enthusiastic, which really can be heard in the music, and really what metal in its purest form should be about. Listening to early Bay Area thrash, Sepultura or Sarcofago, Sodom or Kreator gives me a special feeling, although I wasn't around then I know that this type of music can never return with full honesty.

But yet when I hear songs like "Blackened" or "Inner Self", can I deny their greatness? Nope. Bands evolve and it's great when they still make quality music, but early thrash was something very special.

*sniff*

*wipes nostaligic tears from eyes*

I hear what you're saying, but I loved those tempo changes that nobody fucking uses any more, which is just criminal. To me, that makes metal so much more fuckable. It's those sweet moments when you go "fuck yeah" and turn up the volume at those defining moments. The key riffs that glue the songs together. Suicidal Tendencies (Lights Camera Revolution) is a classic album example. Pretty much all of Beneath the Remains and Arise. And so on.

When you take albums that played on variations of themes, riffs, tempos etc, what you're getting is the perfect spawn from Sabbath and NWOBHM. It's the doom and the punk combines, forming an altogether metal crunching blackness.

Oh man, I am so stoked you bought some Cannibal Corpse. :D I fully agree though, playing 12 different tempos in one song was nearly a standard for awhile, not so much anymore.

I am sure you are into Vio-lence then :) .. they were the masters at this.

Exodus always had toungue in cheek / cheesy lyrics. They were like the AC/DC of the thrash genre.
But I do agree with you ... I never particualrly liked Zetro, but he kicks ass on the tracks I heard. And the production rules too!

Erik, that was fucking beautiful.

As much as I'm a death metal head 90% of the time, I was so all about thrash in the late eighties. Talk like this just gets my blood fucking pumping.

Thrash or be thrashed!

Did someone say Vio-lence? One of my favorite bands of all time?!?!?! Get Eternal Nightmare now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Given my love for Machine Head, yeah, I've been meaning to pick one of theirs up for around a decade now. :D

Can anyone find a decent review for Vio-Lence on the web anywhere?

EDIT: 'decent' meaning something that's favourable. I've never seen such unanimous hatred towards the vocalist.

Haha ... yes Sean Killian (vocals) always got a bad rap for his style, but to me he is very unique. He fits the style of Vio-lence to a tee ...

Download the song "World in a World" for a good example of their style. Should be readily available as it was pretty popular even on MTV at the time.

And ETERNAL NIGHTMARE and OPRESSING THE MASSES were both killer records ... the later with better production.

feh. I know the reviews you speak of and all I can say is fuck 'em. Killian's vocals are some of my favorite... ever.

Well... my love of Vio-lence has always been the reason for my hatred of Machinehead. So take that as you will...

Höhöhö, I need to see if Vio-lence is that much better then!

I heard one song many many years ago and all I can remember is Beardo's voice, but I'll check them out soon enough.
