Nah, you are right. An EP had less material than an LP, but the size of the record was the same. So instead of wasting the space that was left over, the audio data was 'extended'(thus the extended play acronym), which meant it had to be spun faster. Likewise, an LP is a long play, and it needs to be spun at a lower speed. The terms don't really apply anymore, other than the general standards of an EP being a short, few song release, and an LP being a full length album.
