I just absolutely loved the UK edition and Ricky Gervais just rocks my fucking world. But after watching every episode and the special like 4 times over, I thought I'd give the American version a try. At first I didn't like it at all, since the pilot is basically just stringing together jokes from the UK version (only worse) but after that it really started to come into it's own and I really love it so far. Sad to hear that Carell is leaving though.
This was exactly my reaction - as soon as the American version started doing it's own thing, it grew into a better show than the UK one had ever been, IMO, and this is coming from a guy whose favorite shows are Brit-comedies like That Mitchell and Webb Look, Peep Show, Spaced, and Man Stroke Woman.
Not sure I'm bummed on Carell leaving, though - Michael Scott used to serve for some pretty hilarious moments, but now he just bugs the crap out of me. He's terrible in actual films, too, since the only character he's capable of playing is basically Michael Scott.

I'd probably recommend strongly against seeing the first episodes of the US version unless I wanted to make someone think that it was awful - the third (which for obvious reasons wouldn't have worked quite as well across the pond) was when I decided that watching more might be worthwhile. The advantage that I think it has over the UK series is that there are more characters - you'd hardly know from the writing that there are more than three or four people in the UK show, while in the US version the 'minor' characters are actually worth having around (and Creed hands-down beats any character I could name from any of my favorite UK shows in only a handful of real appearances).

You seen the last two series of that mitchell and webb look?
Aye just seen the third, not been able to get a hold of the fourth yet. I still dug it, though!
Always Sunny is the funniest show on TV, period, no sense arguing that one.
And +1 on Creed... fucking hilarious, every time.
