My list from Pivotal Rage:

Ruben Mosqueda's Top 10 of 2008 - added - December 12th, 2008
Reviewer: Ruben Mosqueda

Man this was tough. I narrowed it down to a list of 10 but keep in mind that any of the ten along with the honorable mentions could have made the list at anytime. This is simply the list that I felt was accurate as the deadline approached.

Here they are in no particular order:

1.) Biomechanical – Cannibalised (Earache)

2.) Iced Earth – The Crucible Of Man (SPV USA)

3.) Testament – The Formation Of Damnation(Nuclearblast)

4.) Soulfly – Conquer (Roadrunner)

5.) Cavalera Conspiracy – Inflikted (Roadrunner)

6.) Six Feet Under – Death Rituals (Metal Blade)

7.) Sister Sin – Switchblade Serenades (Victory)

8.) Motorhead – Motorizer (SPV USA)

9.) Yngwie Malmsteen – Perpetual Burn (Rising Force/Koch)

10.) Jon Oliva’s Pain – Global Warning (Locomotive)

The Honerable mentions:

Ministry – Cover Up (13th Planet/Megaforce)

Stone Rider – Three Legs Of Trouble (Trustkill)

Pyramaze – Immortal (Locomotive)

Randy Piper's Animal – Virus (Locomotive)

Unleashed – Hammer Battalion (SPV USA)

Jorn Lande – Lonely Are The Brave (Blistering)

Light This City – Stormchaser (Prosthetic)

Before I get to the biggest disappointments of 2008 I have to point out that Metallica isn’t on there. Despite their lousy sounding album Death Magnetic it’s not a bad effort. I think they finally have to put “The Unforgiven” thing to bed though it’s getting rather old. Take a look at the list, all those big names, all that talent and they can’t get it together to write a solid album?!

Biggest Disappointments of 2008:

Judas Priest – Nostradamus (Sony/BMG)

One disc of this mediocre storyline would have sufficed...

Motley Crue – Saints Of Los Angeles (Eleven Seven Music /Motley)

This one is a mixed bag at best but a step up from New Tattoo.

Buckcherry – Black Butterfly (Eleven Seven Music)

What the hell happened? It’s Time Bomb all over again…wait this isn’t even that good.

Guns ‘N Roses – Chinese Democracy (Geffen)

Man is this the best Axl could do? Just think what he would have done if he had been given a 9 month deadline to write and record an album?

Def Leppard – Music From The Sparkle Lounge (Island)

Put a fork in them, and you thought that “Nine Lives” was a low point? Who would have thought by years end they’d do a show on CMT with Taylor Swift?! Trend whores…

AC/DC – Black Ice (Sony/BMG)

There’s about 3-4 good tunes on this one, I think I like Stiff Upper Lip more, maybe even Ballbreaker… I do think “Rock ‘N’ Roll Train” was brilliant track to launch the album.

Hank III – Damn Right, Rebel Proud (Sidewalk)

After a strong outing with Straight To Hell I wonder what the hell happened? While not a complete bust, this album stalled the momentum that Straight To Hell had established…

Sammy Hagar – Cosmic Universal Fashion (Loud/Roadrunner)

As side from a couple of tracks that were to be used for the Planet US project with Neal Schon, if this album would to be used as a reference for someone that didn’t know what hard rock was they’d vomit. The Beastie Boys’ cover of “Fight For Your Right (To Party)” is dreadful, not to mention the song sounds dated.

No possible way I can top it off @ 10 - This was one of the best years of metal in possibly the past decade.

I've added in two discs I just got in the mail.

I'll do my best:
1. Tony Mills - Vital Designs (Siam circa 2008)
2. Edguy - Tinnitus Sanctus (The Scarecrow Pt. 2)
3. Theocracy - Mirror of Souls (New Metallica doesn't hold a candle to this)
4. Avantasia - The Scarecrow (Liked this much better than Avantasia 1&2)
5. When the Empire Falls - S/T (Dream Evil meets a tiny bit of Linkin Park)
6. Avian - Ashes and Madness (The perfect continuation of "From the Depths of Time" - Every song is catchy as hell!)
7. Firewind - The Premonition (Not quite Allegiance, but not far behind either!)
8. Black Tide - Light From Above (Great debut!)
9. Menchen - Red Rock (Like Titanic with Geoff Tate sort of Vocals).
10. Brainstorm - Downburst (A bit of a letdown from the monstrous Liquid Monster)
11. Yngwie Malmsteen - Perpetual Flame (Possibly his best ever? Certainly one of his most consistent)
12. Dokken - Lightning Strikes Again (Dokken's best since the 80s)
* Dream Evil - Gold Medal in Metal (Compilation)

Haven't heard the new Winterstrain yet.

Honorable Mentions:
Metallica, Alestorm, Journey, Bob Catley (plus probably 2-3 more I can't recall)

Looking Forward to:
New Queensryche, H&H, Megadeth, Armored Saint, Lasse Dale, Krucible (ex ZLZ), CSP, Wycked Synn.

hard for me to even find 10 nowadays...

in order...

Testament
Opeth
Metallica
Gojira
Into Eternity
Scar Symmetry
Pyramaze
Black Tide
Exodus

I can't make a precise list but here's something:

The "real good"
Presto Ballet - The Lost Art Of Time Travel (like the first one, but better)
Ayreon - 01011001 (I didn't like the Human Equation but this is a big step up/back)
Battleroar - To Death And Beyond... (epic...)
Falconer - Among Beggars And Thieves (don't ever leave again, Matthias)
Guns n' Roses - Chinese Democracy (against all odds it is actually very good)
Journey - Revelation (again, this should've kinda sucked but it didn't)
Pharaoh - Be Gone (maybe not quite as good as The Longest Night but still "TOP US METAL" indeed)

The "OK"
Uriah Heep - Wake The Sleeper (rock solid hard rock)
Grand Magus - Iron Will (almost made it to the topmost category)
AC/DC - Black Ice (sounds like AC/DC)
Royal Hunt - Collision Course - Paradox II (standard RH stuff, Boals does fine)
Viron - Ferrum Gravis (not as good as the debut but fine)
Theocracy - Mirror Of Souls (good euro-metal but like with the Avantasias I can't see what makes this a classic like some people say)
Evergrey - Torn (Evergrey-by-numbers)
Jon Oliva's Pain - Global Warning (the best songs are recycled Savatage demo songs which says a lot... was very disappointed at first but I've grown to tolerate it)

The "not good"
Rage - Carved In Stone (boring... Peavy's well has truly run dry again)
Circle II Circle - Delusions Of Grandeur (faceless two-bit power metal, Burden of Truth was great so wtf is this?)
Dantesco - Pagano (bought this kinda blindly... shouldn't have done that)
Helstar - The King Of Hell (it doesn't sound like the Helstar I love, it's great they're reinventing themselves but they sure lost me)
Judas Priest - Nostradamus (what a mess, maybe with some serious editing this could've been a listenable 1cd album)

Yah, I hate myself for it but
I can barely find a single modern band
that even brushes my top 5 favorite bands.
Only modern bands I find remotley appetizing
today are Dr.Livingdead, Warbringer, and Evile.
Thats why my list has only 2 and they aren't new bands! Its been that way for quite a few years now. Its good that plenty of others are finding gems though, keeping the metal alive for the next generation.

best albums of 2008:
1 lindsey buckingham- gift of screws
2 guns n roses- chinese democracy
3 black crowes- warpaint
4 los lonely boys- forgiven
5 king's x -xv
6 extreme- saudades de rock
7 jack bruce/robin trower- seven moons
8 motorhead- motorizer
9 queen + paul rodgers- the cosmos rock
10 george lynch's souls of we- let the truth be know

honorable mentions:
*night ranger- hole in the sun (this was in my top 10 all year until december)
*testament- formation of damnation (very solid)
*saints of the underground-love the sin hate the sinner (too short and for an album this short we don't need 2 cover tunes)

worst album of the year:
*sammy hagar- cosmic universal fashion (sounds like it was thrown together)

major letdown:
*alice cooper- along came a spider (i thought this was going to be two cd's and it wasn't even one 65 minute disc. also it wasn't moody and diverse enough)
*judas priest- nostradamus- (one good album forced into a mediocre two albums)

Beyond the Labyrinth (Spirit of 66, Verviers)

Ayreon - 01011001 (I didn't like the Human Equation but this is a big step up/back)

:err: I forgot my prog list! Anyway, I consider the new Ayreon the weakest so far and unlike you THE is one of the best of Arjen's project.

1) Uriah Heep - Sleeper
2) Extreme - Saudades de Rock
3) Hail of Bullets - Of Frost & War
**To call these a total surpise in an understatement.

the rest in no particular order:
BigElf
Opeth
Mogwai
Testament
Bloodbath
Grave
AC/DC
G N R
Metallica
Iced Earth

Disappointments:
Jon Oliva's Pain...it's OK, but not his typical greatness.

1 - Uriah Heep - Wake the Sleeper
2 - Gojira - The Way of All Flesh
3 - Opeth - Watershed
4 - Guns n' Roses - Chinese Democracy
5 - Iced Earth - The Crucible of Man
6 - Enslaved - Vertabrae
7 - Warrel Dane - Praises to the War Machine
8 - Meshuggah - ObZen
9 - AC/DC - Black Ice
10 - Motorhead - Motorizer

Other stuff:
Budakon! DVD - Cheap Trick. FINALLY, the visual companion to the live at Budakon album. Also, season two of Metalocalypse.

Saw a lot of cool old-school bands this year - Maiden, Motorhead, Priest, UFO, Ace Frehley, Iced Earth, and several I'm forgetting as I type here...

Good year.

Also a weird year. It started slow, and ended good. Also, good (by my ear) records by classic bands, ala Metallica, AC/DC, and even Guns N' Roses. For my part, I really love that record (GNR), and in a way it is my favorite of the year. I'd have included Metallica if I did a top 11....just didn't quite make it.

OK, reformed version.

Metal

1. Avantasia – “The Scarecrow”
2. Sabaton – “The Art Of War”
3. Alestorm – “Captain Morgan’s Revenge”
4. Grand Magus – “Iron Will”
5. Rata Blanca – “El Reino Olvidado”
6. Dream Evil – “Gold Medal In Metal”
7. Exciter – “Thrash Speed Burn”
8. Venom – “Hell”
9. Sister Sin – “Switchblade Serenades”
10. Viron – “Ferrum Gravis”

Prog

1. The Tangent – “Not As Good As The Book”
2. Karmakanic – “Who’s The Boss In The Factory”
3. Presto Ballet – “The Lost Art Of Time Travel”
4. Dunwich – “Heilagmanoth”
5. Seventh Wonder – “Mercy Falls”
6. Ayreon - “01011001”
7. Joe Satriani – “Professor Satchafunkilus And The Musterion Of Rock”
8. Blackmore’s Night – “Secret Voyage”

Dissapointments

Judas Priest - "Nostradamus": long, boring, unworthy. The only reason I have it is because I won it in a giveaway.

Metallica - "Death Magnetic": so much for Rick Rubin, crappy, uninspired, 'Unforgiven III', not even worth as a freebie.

Cryonic Temple - "Immortal": good power metal album, but gone are the cheese and the fun, now it's dark and not much different from other acts, a setback IMO.

Nazareth - "The Newz": ten years since the last dissapointment and for this? They should quitted after "Move Me".

Pharaoh - "Be Gone": not abad album just not as good as "The Longest Night", I hope the next improve.

Motorhead - "Motorizer": I was hoping something better than KOD, but the last really heavy hitter has been "Inferno". Hope Lemmy comes with a wrecking ball for the next one.

Tyr - "Land": a bit too long and lack the spirit of the previous albums, hope they're not loosing their creativity.

Testament - "The Formation Of Damnation": heavy as can be, perfect! But it lacks soul, I find more appealing "Low" or "The Gathering", I was expecting more from the reunion + Bostaph.

Alice Cooper - "Along Came A Spider": not a bad album, but the weakest of his new retro era and also the weakest of his concept albums. Damn it, the song in Avantasia with him sounds better that his album.

Andre Matos - "Time To Be Free": it seems that after Matos left Angra, he also left some anger, because both the Shaaman albums and now this are more melodic metal that true power. Not bad albums, simply blands.

Firewind - "The Premonition": not bad again, but weaker than "Allegiance" and the cover of 'Maniac' is almost an insult to me (at least they labeled it as bonus track).

Ayreon - "01011001": sorry but this time Arjen came bland and long. Not even close as the magic of THE. I'm worried since Stream of Passion wasn't very great either, I hope Arjen comes with a better project now.

Blackmore's Night - "Secret Voyage": I love the first three albums, and I consider them fresh and innovative, but lately there's a feeling of same old same.

Commendations

Great debuts from Black Tide, Sister Sin and Enforcer. Memory Garden returned with a very good album, and a fantastic comeback of Dunwich. Poisonblack and Horcas came with really good heavy albums, so is Death Angel, Benedictum and Jorn.

I gotta say for me Judas Priest Nostradamus is perfect as a double album, even though I'm time restricted and can never play them both together - I did manage to play (disc one of Nostradamus) it back to back with Sad Wings last weekend and it was awesome - Actually, thats my biggest problem I dont have enough time, I seem to devote what little spare time i have to music I'm more familiar with because the listening hours are so precious.

TBH I haven't heard the new Venom:oops: (I'm well behind and getting Resurection for Xmas) or the latest Motorhead.
Testament and Alestorm have not managed many repeated plays in my house at this stage. However Helstar has, even though its a little different to their old stuff. I'm digging it.

1. Stormlord – Mare Nostrum
2. Amon Amarth – Twilight of the Thundergod
3. Bloodbath – The Fathomless Mastery
4. Arsis – We are the Nightmare
5. Red Descending – Where Dreams Come to Die
6. Transcending Bizarre – The Serpents Manifolds?
7. Psycroptic – (Ob)Servant
8. Pyramaze – Immortal
9. Kalmah – For the Revolution
10. Metallica – Death Magnetic

Close but no cigar: (Keep of Kalessin – Kolossus, Iced Earth – The Crucible of Man, Ihsahn – Angl, Opeth - Watershed)

HHMMM… Looking back it wasn’t a bad year.

10. Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal

9. Children of Bodom – Blooddrunk

8. Legion of the Damned – Feel the Blade

7. Cavalera Conspiracy – Inflikted

6. Amon Amarth – Thunder God

5. Into Eternity – the Incurable Tragedy

4. Warbringer - War Without End

3. Gojira – The Way of All Flesh

2. Bonded by Blood – Feed the Beast

1. Death Angel – Killing Season

Honorable Mentions; Testament-Formation of Damnation, Jeff Loomis-Zero Order Phase, Iced Earth-Crucible of Man (great to have Barlow back, but am I the only one that’s over the antichrist story?), Metallica-Death Magnetic, Gama Bomb-Citizen Brain, The Haunted-Versus, Soulfly-Conquer.

Biggest Disappointments; Judas Priest-Nostradamus (ZZZZZZ), In Flames-A Sense of Purpuse (MTV friendly Shit), Cryptopsy-The Unspoken King (WHAT THE FUCK???)
