The Official "You've-Gotta-Check-This-Band-Out!" Thread -- PROG METAL

Although your statement is true, I have found barely anything in the "prog" genre as being progressive. Therefore, I consider them two different things. Prog would be a defined genre of music that takes 70's progressive bands as influence (and the ever present, Dream Theater). Whereas I take "Progressive" as being an attribute of a band (or even of just a specific album), and not a genre in itself.

For instance:

Prog:
Dream Theater
Symphony X
Fates Warning

Progressive:
Dan Swano - Moontower (and really just about all of the EoS releases)
Finntroll
Bathory
Dream Theater - WDADU/I&W

This is an extremely short list of both.

Does this make sense?

...it's a small blessing, I suppose...HA!

Rock on!

Damn it, Ascension, I hate it when you have your shit together...and your excellent taste cannot be ignored...

Red Circuit and the new Platitude (as well as their earlier releases) certainly do kick ass...nice picks...

(Just couldn't resist busting your balls a bit, ya know?)

Rock on!

Venturia.
Glenn, through this post I'm already signing my petition to be a sponsor for Venturia next year.

I agree. I might put them on my list too... just so they get some serious thought. =)

SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE!
BEST NEW COMER BY FAR!! I disagree with the Prog vs progressive
(trying to seperate them that is), it's just an evolution of the same thing really.....Prog-Power is just the newest newest hybrid, or rather
the newest "term" for prog-metal which was mearly the new word for progressive metal (used in the late 80's and early 90's) The Genre has gotten heavier as time goes on and now Prog-Power basicly means progressive Metal on steroids. Although Dream Theater, Savatage and Queenryche are all huge influences on the genre in general, there are some that have broken out of those molds and ventured farther, these are the ones that stand out as unique and great, although I think S.U.E. has a lot of D.T. in them, they are truely a fantastic band that writes amazing music and I like their new album MENTAL TORMENTS more than any Dream theater album I've ever heard, and for me to say that is very hard!

SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE!
BEST NEW COMER BY FAR!!

I have to agree with my Bro, MEGALOUD, SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE will blow your shorts off, i have had it for about 3 weeks and it continues to alternate in my CD Players with.....You guessed it PYRAMAZE "LEGEND OF THE BONE CARVER" These two CDs will definetly be in my top 10 for 2006 probably #1 and #2. How was the cruise Bro, did you and the family have a good time??? Glad to have you back.

I dunno if these bands are considered too well known to be posted here, but two of my favorite prog. metal bands are Adagio and Pagan's Mind. Adagio is, for better or worse, a French Symphony X with a somewhat darker feel. Pagan's Mind shares a lot of paralells with Dream Theater, but overall more riff-oriented.
My 2 cents.
