Dimmuborgir is a unique jagged lava formation with shrubs and growth. It is believed to have been formed in an ancient pond of lava which emptied after the lava had solidified to a certain extent. The remains are a collection of tall lava structures forming a variety of outlandish formations, predominantly oddly shaped hollow boulders. The best known is probably the Church (Kirkjan), a tall vault open at both ends.
Erosion has taken a high toll to the east of Lake Mývatn, placing the vegetation and formation of Dimmuborgir under serious threat. Measures have been taken against this with considerable success.
