The roots of heavy metal

Great article! I've heard most of what the article says before, but there were some interesting bits here and there that I didn't know. Also as the previous post mentions, it kind of makes you want to revisit those bands that layed the groundwork for todays metal.

YEAH!!! Thats what Im talking about, someone that knows the truth. He didnt mention Crazy Authur Browns "Fire" or... forgive me but Inagodadivida, or Guess Whos American Woman, or James Gangs funk #481 and other Joe Walshs totally riff laden rockers or most of the entire work of Grand Funk dating from '69, Uriah Heep, Queens debut, one of the worst to forget is Focus's Hocus Pocus '71. Golden Earings Radar Love. But he did mention some I never heard and some I never heard of. So its easy to forget all the particular songs or bands that brought balls to the wall, loud and proud, overdriven rock... in yer face to the table.

The main thing to know AND ACCEPT is that it started with rockers in the 60's and has steadily progressed, but the dum da dum da dum da dum driving rhythm did not start out as metal nor was created by metal bands. Nor did the aggressive "screaming" vocals, nor distorted wailings on guitar. I grew up on the stuff during those times and remember the impact of songs I mentioned and he mentioned when they hit AM radio and back then it was pretty much the only way to know what was going on across the world in music, unless you lived right in one of the big urban areas or colleges and were old enough to go to clubs, but we were neither. What we did know was "this aint the Beatles" "fuck the Beatles... this stuff ROCKS"

Im more than just proud... Im honored to have witnessed the entire evolution of heavy music... but must admit the generation gap finally began sometime after the 90's. Alot of it today is WAY too ugly for me and even most of the 80's thrash was too. Mainly because Im not into gore topics or bad vocals, the riffage always hits the mark.

That song :hotjump:. There's a cover by Cathedral an another by More, really good tune indeed.

@ Psycho: Yes, Crescent Shield is doing really fine, the second album is way better than the debut. Hope those guys keep on, they have good chemistry IMO.

really? I didnt know anyone ever metalized it if thats what they did. Cant say Im surprised because I always wanted to. That was 1968

Love Jimis "Fire" too... 1967

He was friggin nuts ! Sounds more like heavy Doors to me. Again in case no one knows its Vincent Crane on keys who left with Carl Palmer to form Atomic Rooster, not sure if thats Palmer on the drums or not, he didnt record but is credited with the US tour, I see hes doing a little head banging. No guitar in this band, it was all based on Cranes heavy Hammond sound.

Shame on anyone forgetting Alice Cooper and his first bands work. This music sounds like a Pearl Jam song, they recorded it in 1970

Halo of Flies/Desperado is where its at in my opinion

Didn't know the original was that old. Cathedral version was the first time I listened to the tune actually, it comes in the "Hopkins" EP. More was a NWOBHM band that made a cover on their album "Warhead" (1981).

And thanks for the YouTube link of 'The Ballad Of Dwight Fry' one of the best songs from "Love It To Death" (but please will all due respect NEVER compare the great Coop with something like Pearl Jam :ill:).

acually Wyv I was refering to them (PJ) having a sound nearly identical to that OLD main rhythm, just listen to it. (I was actually pluggin for Alice and Co as the origionators of... "grunge"... lol )

I havent heard Love it to Death since prolly '75, I need to get it because I rememeber how much I liked it. Bought the Killer tape sometime during the early 90's just so I could hear it again. Love the song "Nervous" but Halo/Desp are so awesome. I have no Cooper on CD, should get my butt in gear on that one. Love it to Death through Billion Dollar Babies should be must haves.

I'm absolutely allergic to grunge, if I listen to 'Jeremy' for more than two seconds I barf

Yes they are and I even go further: "Muscle Of Love" is an album I really like, great songs in it some to me highly underrated like 'Hard Hearted Alice' and ' Crazy Little Child'. And his material from "Welcome To My Nightmare" to "Lace And Whiskey" it's also excellent.

Very nice. Heavy music didn't just start, it evolved. Altho Black Sabbath can be credited with 80% if it all.

Razor, I always enjoy reading your points of view.

I've been going thru hell these last 8 months and haven't had much time to sit in front of a commputer. I miss the Ultimate Metal community. Especailly Old School.

Rock on!
