The signal volume when recording

how loud is the signal volume when you guys recording to the DAW like kick snare drums guitar bass?

Do I need recording with much gain as almost hit 0 as possible?

Depends....are you recording in the 16 bit or 24 bit realm?
16 Bit needs a good input signal and 24 is fine in the yellow (so too speak)

At 24bit you need to reach an average level of -18dbfs RMS.

hey R. Kelsey, does peak level and RMS the same? when I turn up and down the fader, is that a peak level or RMS

Basically, RMS is the average and peak is the top level. RMS corresponds better with what we hear as humans. We don't actually hear the peak level, we hear a sort of average power.
