The World Loses David Bowie 1/10/2016

Bahahaha that's the scene.

And I listened to that song. Musically it's pretty decent. Not something I'd listen to often but it's enjoyable.

I discovered that I don't really enjoy Bowie's vocals though. I dunno. Just not my thing.

Admittedly, he can be very passé if you didn't grow up on his music/get into him early in your life.

What are his say 3 or 4 most essential albums?

Depends on who you ask, most will probably disagree with my choices.

Space Oddity (aka self titled), The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans (contentious choice most likely but I love his style of glittery blue-eyed Soul).

Basically between 1969 and 1976 you can't go wrong, especially as a beginner.

I've given Meantime a few tries in the past (not in a few years) and was never able to get into it. I just put on Strap It On, however, and am really digging it.

Strap It On fucking rules, I was going to mention that one actually. It's the only one I like but it has enough replay value to justify liking just one of their albums.

I guess Low and Hunky Dory should also be mentioned when talking about his essential albums. But generally I'd recommend almost every albums of his (except the debut) until the album called Tonight. I still have to put on his latest one.
