They Want Kiss!

You guys are missing the point.
The people that get the votes are the same knuckleheads
that vote for who gets a grammy or things like that...

I think everybody got the point. There are two music industries:

  1. the pop one: includes everything that some lables want the people to believe is the cool thing. Includes Grammy, MTV, radio, media in general and is oriented wherever the money machine wants to go (pop, hip-hop, rap, reggaeton, mallcore, some country)
  2. the real one: includes music by artist which income depends on real fans and/or is not music driven by money machines. Includes whatever is never touched by MTV, Grammy, media etc. (real metal/rock, jazz, classical, folk, some country)

Eh, i think Alice Cooper deserves to be in there more than Kiss does, and HE'S not in there! If it weren't for the Coop, Kiss wouldn't have a trail to tread on. Alice CREATED the flashy theatricality (or "shock rock") that Kiss, King Diamond, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, and WASP followed in. Even David fucking Bowie was inspired by Alice, that's how we got Ziggy Stardust/Alladin Sane, etc. Alice did it first and i think, best. I like Kiss and all, alot, but i just think Alice is more important of an artist and just my opinion, has been much more consistant in his career than Kiss ever was. He should get in first, me thinks.
Very true!

But still, the R&R Hall of Fame means nothing special. Fans appreciation means so much more! :headbang:
Even Ozzy said something along those lines some time ago. But that was before Black Sabbath's induction I think...

  1. bands who cater to the music industry
  2. bands who do not cater to the music industry

Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll," the site says.

The problem is that they don't explain in the criteria that the band has to cater to the music industry to be considered no matter how much influence they have had on future generations of musicians!

I agree Alice needs to be in the the Hall of Fame as does many bands who are not there including KISS!

You know there's always a way to explain things in simpler words

so what signifigance did Tom Petty and Blondie bring that got them in????

Probably because they're friends of Jann Wenner, Chief Editor of Rolling Stone magazine, who is also on the Board of Directors of the R&R Hall of Fame.

Jann Wenner is known to hate Kiss (don't know about Alice Cooper) though he is, in a way, responsible for his own headache in that Kiss found their first lead guitarist, Ace Frehley, because he was one of the guys who came in to audition from their ad in Rolling Stone.

That is true for the most part, but I believe there are those who get lucky enough to be one and two. I don't think Nirvana nor Pearl Jam were really trying to cater to the music industry when they both became huge. They created a new style of "pop" as opposed to following it. Another glaring example has always been Neil Young. As long as there is radio around, there wuill be some Neil Young played, but he literally gave the finger to one of his former labels because they demanded "hit songs" from him. I do think MOST of the radio friendly bands out there are a bit homogenized and watered down by their eagerness to sell records, but I don't think that is the case with every artist who has ever become famous. The Beatles as they matured pretty much did what the fuck they wanted to do after they matured.

Everything Kiss did, Alice did better. The short, loud, punchy, raw, hard, garage rock-ish stuff, the epic theatrical songs, experimental songs, commercial poppy songs, he even did hair metal better than they did. And another thing....at least Alice still has his integrity. Something Kiss lost years ago.

As to the integrity, Gene $immons$ will tell you that he's never cared about integrity.

That's exactly why I try to avoid the term "sell-out". I only use it in extreme circumstances like Metallica. There are alot of bands who fit in both categories that are there quite unintentionally. Do you think Dragonforce made their new album thinking "we're sure to get on Ozzfest with this one!"? No, they made the same kind of album they always do and someone in power "decided" to add a new flavor to an otherwise drab stew.

There are some bands who set out to sell records (KISS) and have never made any bones about it. There are some bands who set out with the greatest intentions, but fall to the pressure (or get snookered by lawyers) into making something that doesn't speak from their heart.

Then there are traditional musicians who just create their art and let the industry cards lay where they fall. Some get lucky, some don't, monetarily speaking.

Wyvern's right, there are two totally separate music industries...and unfortunately (for me and my homeland) it's the greedy Americans who control most of the world's access to music.

Thank God for the Internet! It got me back into music five years ago. Before that I was just happy listening to my 80s collection over and over.

Amen brother !! Luckily, I have been online for about 12 years now so after the demise of American thrash, it was only a couple of years and I was discovering progmetal, European bands and the like. :)

They've existed for as long as the entire thrash movement and not one thrash band is in there. It'll be decades before even big time speed/thrash bands get the nod. The sparse selection of punk bands is also very glaring. There are also a lot of real head scratchers in there.
Blondie? Parliament/Parliament Funkadelic, Fats Domino, Tom Petty, and so on. Just look at the list of official inductees, there are plenty of stinkers in there. A poster eluded to the fact that some of those lame choices got in because of relations with the selection committee, and that is probably true. Think of it like this: Your favorite metal band probably never won a Grammy, and most likely never will. Just realize that like the Grammies the RARHOF is a bunch of crap and don't get down on yourself.

Calm down junior! Why do you care what a total stranger says about your comment?! I think Gene has redeemed himself some with his show Family Jewels, he has become an entertainer again. Is his show staged, uh yeah, but it is funny, entertaining and a good family show!!! Am I a KISS fan? Casually. I'm still bitter and have been since 1998. I don't like the direction the band has taken their career... I think if they wind up waiting another 10 years for the Hall of Fame, I'd been fine with it... I just thought that they were calling it a career and then the next thing you know it the never ending reunion tour?! Then an awful studio record that only featured the vocals of the band? And former members and sessions players?! Then they boot the drunks and get scab players?! I love Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer both killer musicians, by but it is insulting to have them wear the paint. Take the paint off record a new record and move on... If someone mentions KISS I see red... :heh: On the other hand I am looking forward to Paul's solo album, because it's him and not KISS. I'm also looking forward to him smoking Gene's solo album. :p
