Thy Disease - Devilish Act Of Creation
Metal Mind Records, 2001
by Perkele
The Polish group Thy Diseasef/b] was formed in 1999. They released two mini CDs before their first album 'Devilish Act Of Creation' came out last year. In their home country Poland they received a very good reception, they had even been considered as the best Polish debut metal group 2001 by the readers of Metal Hammer magazine
So I was really eager to hear their music when I finally got DAOC to my hands.
After the first (superficial) listening I would easily put them into the melodic black metal category, but there is more in their music. It is a fact that the screaming vocals and the melodic keyboard parts tend towards melodic black metal but soon they break the charm with growlings, thrash riffings and fast drum blastings. For example, 'Crashing The Soul' starts like a melodic death metal song. Not just the music changes till the end of it but they also use both vocal styles more than once. You hear growling when you would expect black metal-ish vocals upon the music or in reverse, there is screaming vocals while the music reminds of dry, fast death metal. But we can take 'Finding the God' as another example. Without the vocals parts it would fit into a melodic power-thrash album as well. Of course there are more typical melodic black songs but they also spiced them up with some great guitar solos, just listen 'The Wish' carefully. Some tracks kick off as if it was a thrash band, but then come again the above mentioned black and death elements and at the end you won't find any category you could put them into. Another good example for this is 'Art Of Decadence' - also a favourite song of mine.
I think it is time to give up to analyse the songs after each other - I'd rather try to summarize what music they made. They simply grabbed the best elements of black, death and thrash metal and mixed them together. They tried to use the more melodic characters of these styles but they took care to keep it aggressive and heavy enough so the music could stay a bit raw. There is a little industrial touch in their music too but you can hear it only a few times, mostly just in some intros. Fortunately the keyboards are not too forward either, it's rather give some atmospheric feeling to the music. Sometimes these keyboards parts happen to be a bit too typical and that's my only problem with this album.
If you listen to the album, take the time and read the lyrics with the music together.
I also want to mention the cover artwork made by Jaroslaw 'K'haal' Kubicki. For the first glance it looks like a normal metal cover but take a closer look to this piece of dark-art and you will see it reflects the title perfectly.
Stand out tracks: The Soul, Finding God, My Serpent, Art Of Decadence. TD was even not afraid to pick a pop song to make a cover from it and in this case they chose 'Frozen' from Madonna. They simple did a good job with this song.
Tracklist:
1. Condemnation Of Whores
2. Angel Ashamed
3. Impure Lust
4. Crashing The Soul
5. Finding God
6. The Wish
7. New Slaughter
8. Art Of Decadence
9. Coursed
10. My Serpent
11. Frozen
12. Act Of Creation
Length: 46:50
