Thy Disease - Rat Age (Sworn Kinds Final Verses)
Crash Music - CMU61183 - 2006
By Brandon Strader
This album has been in regular rotation in the "Heavy Metal Machine" aka my car, because it is just so good. I couldn't find the time to stop listening to it and actually review the darn thing, so here it goes.
Ding. The sound of one bell being struck opens up Thy Disease's latest album, Rat Age (Sworn Kinds Final Verses). This introduction track then evolves into a techno beat that is pretty snazzy for the next minute, very cool and a great opener. It leads smoothly into the first real song, "Prophecy", and this electronic element remains in the music for the whole album! These guys have three albums and a live DVD out prior to the release of this new Rat Age, which is pretty impressive. I have never heard of these guys before, but their sound is explosive and, more importantly, addictive. I think Poland is the cutting edge of good death metal, and these guys keep that going very honorably.
First off, the production is great! The guitars have a nice balanced tone with plenty of clarity, and plenty of distortion. Their drummer is constantly working out, tossing in a bar of blastbeats here, and complex drum patterns there. The vocalist thrusts his high-pitched gutteral growls out like it's nothing, and they sound thick yet realistic and not over-produced. That electronic element I mentioned earlier really adds to the sound, having crunchy sounds added to the more thrashy sections, or wooshing synth spread around for good measure. Just listen to the beginning of "Earth Will Shake" to see what is so great about the electronics. When the band bursts into blast-beat stuffed death runs, they prove that the electronic element really is not that necessary, but it is a great addition to the sound. The point is, these guys are so good, they can stand on their own. The kit sounds fantastic, most notably the snare tone, which sounds pretty unique. The instrumentation and songwriting is top notch, and the guitarists even break out some awesome shreds.
Rat Age is brilliant. I recommend it to everyone simply because the rush you get from the riffs, blastbeats, growls, and electronics all going at the same time is something everyone should experience. Oh the speed, whooo... This is the future of techno-death metal, so take notice. It's been a long time since such a grand death metal album has come out, so props to Thy Disease for filling that gap!
