Artist: Thyrfing
Album: Farsotstider
Label: Candlelight USA
Released: 2006
Having heard so much about Thyrfing in the past few months I was very excited to finally get my hands on one of their albums. There is quite a buzz about this band going on who in January made their US debut at the Heathen Crusade festival in Minnesota. After listening to the album the excitement I had built up was not quite fulfilled. I dont see the huge deal about them but I also do not think they are a throw away either. A very quality band. With elements of black metal and even deeper and darker they are definitely more than just a Viking metal band. I give these guys credit for being original sounding. The album is done completely in Swedish but with most blackened/death vocals the way it is performed it is not quite understandable so not a big deal there. The album title "Farsotstider" translates to "Time of Plague". The opener "Far At Helvete" sets the tone for the album as I envision a huge battle about to ensue. "Baldersbalet" has its head banging moments while "Tiden Laker Intet" paints an image in my head of being chased through a forest by a dark figure. The keyboards in the title track are pretty wild. Overall this band has their moments that I enjoy but I am not crazy about them. I am gonna keep them around as they have potential to grow on me more. Check them out for yourself and see what you think. They are very unique. Thyrfing is very popular in Europe and I wish the band luck on breaking through in the US. I can see this band playing on an American tour teamed up with someone like Finntroll, Amon Amarth, or Opeth and the reaction going over well. If put on a good tour here in America I will indeed check them out.
