anyone have any evidence of whether Clive Burr used coated or clear tom skins while tracking Number Of The Beast with Martin Birch at Battery Studios back in the day?

Nicko uses coated in the studio, a fact this current pic of Maiden in the studio with keven shirley supports:

appears to be Evans G2 skins all 'round....

anybody know where some pics of Burr at Battery, behind his kit, tracking NOTB can be found?

It's always interesting to see Nicko's drum setups...he's changed the way his drums are arranged quite a bit over the years...he always has cool setups, and they're really different from other drummers...

It's hard to deny his bad-assedness, though...he's the freakin' man!

I've been amazed for years at how close a lot of his cymbals are to the toms, laying over them like they do...giving a lot smaller tom target, as well...but he's still incredible...

Anyone seen the Classic Albums - Iron Maiden: Number of the Beast DVD? Maybe that might have some studio shots or something in it?

im guessing clear skins... but hey, thats only from live pics i have from the TOUR.

Maiden take pride in not using pro tools and i thought said never used a click. As far as i am aware, kevin shirley still does their stuff with tape too.

yeh, got every dvd maiden has ever put out , but no conclusive evidence :(

funny cause I've had Doug Hall on the phone asking how to cut and paste their live stuff! Steve actually has his own HD rig they record most shows with.

Its quite apparent Nicko doesn't like a metronome, but I expect better from a pro band to be honest.

Has Mr Steve Harris become a Protools addicted? great!!!

Well just on the two last albums as you said, before they had a very good timing.

At some point, after many years of neglect, I put on "Somewhere in Time" or something and it made me realize how I have come to expect the triggering of kick drums.

But still, it's IRON fucking MAIDEN!!!

no haha i don't think so, I think they're very old school, which I guess is fair enough. It's not like the old way of doing things hasn't worked for them is it. I still think Peace of Mind is my favourite sounding Maiden album though. I think Martin Birch did some great stuff back in the day.

As far as timing goes tho, even on Number Of The Beast you notice Clive slightly speeding up and down, maybe its because I do this every day I can't listen to any album (including everything I've worked on) without finding fault. I don't think it's affected Maidens record sales though....

I don't do this every day and I still have the same problem. I think most of use agree it just comes with the field.

I have one really good thing about KS...at least the kick drum is coming back up a little...have you noticed the kick starting to fade a bit after Live After Death...up until the last couple of albums? Maybe it's just me, but the kick seemed to not have any presence for a while.

That's one of my favorite Andy trademarks, is the clear, killer kicks!

For what it's worth, the drumsound on "Piece of Mind" is one of my all time favourites. However, I thought "Brave New World" suffered from a serious case of Lead Snare Drum. Great tunes, but I can't stand the sound of the record.
