I'm having real trouble fitting toms into my mixes. There's a section in a song i'm working on where it's got double bass with sortof tribal toms on top, and they just completely kill each other. The bass drum ends up as a nasty click and the toms end up lacking any clarity.
Any suggestions?

solo the kick and the toms, pan the kick hard left and the toms hard right. then put a spectrum analyzer on the master bus and make the display so that you get separate lines for left and right channel and try to reduce frequency crossovers, especially in the 0-300hz region. and remember to highpass the toms as high as possible without killing the low end (I usually end at 60-150hz depending on the tom sizes).
