Tone and Kick drum Questions

So i like to record my own personal songs, and i like them to sound good. I don't exactly have an expensive set up, but it gets the job done. My two main questions are 1) How do i get that "polished" guitar tone? I know it's never going to be incredible, but i just would like to at least have a hint of good, polished tone a la joey sturgis. 2) Getting the kick drum to react with the subs like a lot of joey sturgis' recordings. I'm not trying to copy him or anything, i just am curious how to get hints of the sounds he gets.

I'm using ezdrummer with dfh in logic pro 8. For guitars and bass i'm using a line 6 toneport. (which for the price actually sounds very good)

thanks for any help!

Change DFH for SD2.0, I just don't think you can get a huge drum sound with the original DFH, but with Pod Farm you should be able to get a Sturgis style tone pretty easily dude, just do a google search about it.

Well, i did, and i figured user input would be helpful. Thanks though man, i'll look into it! I'm sure i sound like a total n00b in my original post, but i figure why not ask!

It's not that you sound like a newbie, it's that there's an alarming number of threads started here about Joey fucking Sturgis - many of which have been previously answered if you search the forums. No offence to Joey, but I'm pretty sure the thing ^up there^ says "Andy Sneap".

Honestly the best thing you can do is take the sound you have, and fuck about with it until it sounds like you want - whether that's like Sturgis, Sneap or anyone else. If someone tells you how to do it, you'll do it and move on to asking how to get your bass sounding like Jaco Pastorius and your vocals to sound like Chris Cornell. If you work it out for yourself, you'll have a better idea of why it sounds like it does, and you'll be able to apply that knowledge and adapt it for when you want a different sound.

i wouldnt agree with this personally. If you route everything out to their own tracks and do some post processing such as compression, eq and reverb you can make it sound good. Except for the kick and snare lol, i loathe and refuse to work with the kick and snare. Much cheaper going this route and but if you have the money purchase (the word we do not speak of, PURCHASE!) superior and blend it with some free samples off here for the ultimate sub chug click kick drum madness. Also as far as guitar tone, any of the free amp sims IMO destroy most commercial amp sims. Get TSEX30, LE546, LEXTAC, nick crow's 8505 or 7170 and you will be set. Also, for the love of god get a bass, downtuned guitar just sounds like utter shit. Also listen to what most people on hear have to say and searchbar any questions!

And in regards to the things that Joey does, he is very good at what he does and it takes ALOT of experience and skill to be on his level (not trying to stroke joey's ego lol)

What I meant was the snare sound in DFH really can't be tweaked to make it sound thick and good, but I suppose the other samples can be made to sound pretty ok.

But for good guitar tones, these free amp sims are as good as Pod Farm or any of that line 6 shit, TSEX30 and LE546 are the best amp sims I have ever used, they are just fucking awesome for good heavy tones:goggly:

While Joey is a great engineer, have you tried listening to any other commercial engineers? I believe they all have a polished guitar tone and a sub driven kick. Its actually pretty simple, you boost the sub frequencies. And even if Joey himself were to respond to this and go hey heres the kick I used A ____ with 3khz added and dipped some 300 hz and boosted 50hz THAT DOESNT MEAN IT WILL SOUND ANYWHERE NEAR GOOD IN YOUR MIX. Mix with YOUR EARS. Most of the time when someone is mixing they have to tweak the instruments accordingly to the sounds around it. Theres so much more involved in a great recording besides a polished guitar and sub kick. Remember you have SNARE, BASS, CYMBALS, KEYBOARDS, FUCKIN SOLOS, VOCALS and whatever the fuck else the band throws at you.
