Yay, in theory.
In practise there's many factors involved.
Personally I'd never try to "fix" my main rig if it is working.
If you've the luxury of a second set up then best thing to do is test, or let someone else test it first.

I've never had an issue tracking to an external HDD. Used to do it all the time before I installed a dedicated internal record drive.
