It's ironic that veteran West Coast power thrashers Imagika (Crash) and Prototype (Nightmare) finally have decent deals with American labels after struggling to get their music out for over a decade now. Prototype was formed from the ashes of Psychosis, which released a popular demo called Seed. With the core of vocalist and guitarist Vince Levalois and guitarists Kragen Lum (both from Psychosis), Prototype's official debut was the e.p. Cloned which was released in 1998. They returned four years later with their official full length debut, Trinity.
Continuum is the follow up to 2002's Trinity. Similar to Trinity, Prototype again combine power metal, thrash, and progressive metal for an appealing mix. They cover all bases; aggression ("Transcendant Velocity"), progressive ("With Vision"), and melodic ("Devotion"). The album was mixed by Neil Kernon and the percussion stands out with busy, technical drumming on songs like "The Way It Ends" and "With Vision." The technical thrash of "Synthespian" reminds me of Megadeth crica Rust in Peace. Continuum features re-recorded versions of three songs originally found on Cloned; "Transcendant Velocity," "Seed," and "Synthespian."
It's nice to see these classy and talented guys getting their music out with a decent label these days. Album Score: 8.5 out of 10
