Transient Designer

ive used the SPL transient designer on snare and toms and found it to be really usefull. I could sculpt the response of each drum without doing anything as harsh as gating. I could sharpen the attack and round off the sustain. Really nice tool.

I've kinda wondered the same thing, Brett. By the way, I just noticed that Andy has the SPL hardware version listed in his equipment list.
hit him up for a price.. he was talking about selling it while i was there.

This is really useful on an overcompressed sound. Sometimes, you have to squash a snare (for example) to keep it in an descent dynamic range (especially with a bad drummer). Then you end up with no bite on your snare (you killed the transients). With this kind of tool, you can recreate the trancients but you have full control on the dynamic. I haven't tried the "transient designer" but TransX and PSP mixtreble. I Really like it on the drums.

I use a Transient Designer on almost every one of my mixes. I'm a fan of compression, and when I finally reach the drum sound that I like, the attacks are pretty much gone. To make everything punchier than ever before, I'll throw on the TD, and, like magic, my drum sound is there. If I had to pick one of my most important non-compressor pieces of gear, it'd have to be this one.

Waves Trans-X is pretty good. I've gotten some mileage out of the "more snare", "more stick", "mega kick", and "more punch" (on overheads of all things!) presets, but I find myself not using it as much now that I'm getting better at micing, eq, and using more "standard" compression.

In a roundabout kind of way, I always do some transient shaping on snares by throwing a c4 on it and shaping the sound by boosting or cutting the bands. It's roundabout transient shaping in that you can definitely change the perceived attack of the track by boosting or cutting a few db here or there. Great for getting rid of that harsh "paper" snare attack.

Never heard of Transient Designer. Damn, I really do learn something new here everyday.
