Trauma – Imperfect Like A God

Poland’s Trauma play a convincing mix of brutal and technical death. Precision is the order of the day here, as the strongly rhythmic songs twist and turn in their meandering course. The drums are supremely tight – machinegun double bass rolls and sharp blasts are fragmented by lightening speed fills. Breakdowns show similarly exact rhythm guitar work, while the leads can have some melody, at the same time maintaining the songs’ momentum. Pinched harmonics appear throughout, as do lightening fast solos. The bass is also well performed, and follows the dynamic changes with ease. Occasional solo moments add a nice unusual touch. This is topped off by rather generic yet undeniably effective mid-tone growls. While there is little variation, the rest of the music has enough happening to maintain your interest.

While only a thirty-five minute album, Imperfect Like A God is just the right length. The music is unforgiving enough to make an impact in that time, but with enough interesting elements to maintain your interest. A perfect balance is made between brutality and technicality. While not the most original band ever, Trauma provide solid performances and show a relatively varied sound for their style. Highly recommended to brutal death fans, this may also appeal to those who follow technical death, and extreme music in general.

7/10
