Tribute to Mr. Lord

I know that there is another thread on the forum about Jon Lord, but I felt that I had to do something a little special at this sad time. Deep Purple changed my musical interests and life forever. With over 300 albums and CD’s of Deep Purple and the spin-offs, include Jon’s solo material, I have spent probably hundreds, if not thousands, of hours listening to music that Jon helped to make and perform. When Deep Purple performed the 30th anniversary of Jon’s Concerto at Royal Albert Hall in 1999, I had to be there. So, the passing of Jon is almost like losing a family member.

I met Jon Lord once back stage after one of Deep Purple’s shows in the 1990’s. He was everything that his legend made him out to be: intelligent, ultimate gentleman, witty, articulate, warm, dignified, and just a kind soul.

Hear "Carry On...Jon," Ritchie Blackmore's Instrumental Tribute to Deep Purple's Jon Lord

Blackmore recently discussed the track with New Jersey's Star-Ledger newspaper:

"We were snowed in ... the engineer and myself, the producer, we had nothing to do. I said, ‘I have an instrumental I’ve vaguely finished. Do you want to try it?’

"I wrote it on the spur of the moment. I had a very melancholy kind of tune. Then I started thinking about Jon. I thought maybe we should do an organ part at the end, as a tip of the hat to Jon. Pat Regan is an accomplished organist. We put the organ sound on, and off he went. I guided him on a few things, like riffs and how Jon played syncopation with his right hand.

"It was a throwaway idea that turned into something. It was something to Jon, a way of saying thanks for the years. It’s hard to talk about, when someone says, ‘What did you think of Jon?’ I’d rather play a tune. We wouldn’t have put it on if we hadn’t been snowed in. Maybe Jon caused the blizzard."

Couple of very early concerts for me were 2 of Deep Purple in Wichita, about 1969/71 era. Unfortunately, never got to see the Mark I lineup, but the Mark II one was solid both times. Lord doing all the killer stuff, nearly tipping over the organ again and again, the great distorted sound he helped invent, all the great songs he helped write... blow away stuff for a teenaged kid back then. Always liked that era of the band, and haven't seen them since. Not that I don't like most of what they've done, even the new album rocks, just the way things turned out I guess.
