Tunebot for your iphone

Whoa. Very interested to see how well that works. love me the tune bot. And that's $98 cheaper....

I bought it and fiddled with it for a while. I know nothing about tuning drums so this seemed like a good idea. At first use it was pretty unintuitive, but I'm sure with practice it'll get easier. I did make a shitty tom sound less shitty with it, though.

I'm going to my studio in an hour. I'll check it out vs the tunebot. One thing about the tunebot is it has that clip.... I'll need three hands with this app. But for two bucks it's a no brainer, if you ever get caught without the tune bot.

I bought a tuner app for my iPhone and as mva801 said, you need 3 hands with it, or you have to set something down everytime you tune up or down, then put your key down, get the pitch, repeat. They work, you just need to be patient with them. FWIW, I just bought a Tunebot, so I'll test my one against the iPhone app at the weekend.

I have no drums near me or I'd buy this in a heartbeat. Can anyone report back on if it works well? Particularly dudes who have the hardware version?

I have both. I honestly like the tune bot more for the simple fact that it clips to your drum and frees up your hands. I have not tried using it to tune with yet.

However, I really like all the other features of this app. Like being able to save tunings and the tuning calculator.

Actually maybe I could put my stupid iphone case clip on and attach it to a mic stand to give this a go, but like I said having to hold the phone, then smack the drum, then put down the stick then twist the lug, then pick the stick back up is a bigger pain that it's worth.

I hear they are developing both an android version and some sort of alternate tuning mode where it will filter out overtones like the tunebot does (or it will ignore frequencies that are not in or around the area you set).

Interesting. I can't imagine the built in mics on these phones being very optimal for the purpose, though. The internal mic would overload and distort the signal to hell if you put the phone that close, which I can't imagine would lead to very accurate readings...?

That's the one I used Tom, it was pretty good. If someone made a clip that I could stick on my iPhone, I'd have kept using that.

I use Earbot :loco:

I have never met a drummer (even good session players) who can properly tune drums so I have learned how to do it out of necessity.

Put the drum upside down on carpet to kill resonance of top head and loosen all the lugs on the bottom head.
Tighten the bottom head across all lugs until you start to hear a note.
Bring up the tuning slowly until you hear a note that "sings"
This will be the resonant frequency of the drum.
Think of the drum as a small circular room that has a wavelength.
A tom has a set pitch and tuning to any other pitch won't get the same punch.
DW shells are marked with this note inside the shell.
Mentally note the pitch of this note (sing it in your head) then tap the centre of the head with a stick and bring each lug down then back up to the note and repeat until you can hit the centre of the head with no rings or "beats"
Put drum back on mount then tune top head to bottom head.
Done!

I will make a video tutorial during the week if I find time.

They have a gain settings for the mic.
