So our drummer has a great snare, a black panther. sounded real good in the store..., now, a few months later, after putting on the skins etc. it sounds like crap!
well, I`m recording his rock band next week, so I want it to sound awesome, so please help me!
snare sound I`m looking for: like nickelback or 3doorsdown. actually I dont care which band it sounds like, it just has to sound good, and I know this snare CAN sound good!

So I tried tuning it with the drumdial. tuned the top to 88, as it says in the pdf. not a big problem here. but then I want to tune the resonant skin and wtf!?, this thing sounds like total crap when I play it. I mean, like really tight and pitched so you can`t even hear the overtones anymore..., wtf? I saw tuning videos, they just tuned both skins to the same pitch, both sounded pretty similar...
so my guess is, that the skins might be a bad choice. I really don`t know.
here are some infos:

black panther snare
top: remo weatherking emperor X (drumdial 88 seemed to be ok)
bottom: remo weatherking ambassador (when tuned by ear, to top skin->drumdial says 60 or so....., and when tightening so that drumdial says 88, the thing is frickin high!!)

any advice would be great! willing to buy other skins too (though these are pretty new). and if it`ll sound as awesome as I hope with my new SPL goldmike, I`ll post samples for you guys!(also got a tama starclassic or smth. better up for that session)

Yeah, to be honest, I think you answered your own question by saying it sounds really high pitched and tight. Drop the tuning down some and see how it sounds.

ok, so I tried everything for 4h now and I`m fucking frustrated! something has to be wrong. If I tune to 80 on top, it`s not even tight. you know, a can press my hand on it and it goes down and air comes out of the air hole.
maybe the skins are damaged because the way too high tunings before ?

and its this snare: link

Hows the bottom tuned? Try tuning it down to fingertight then go about 2 turns on each, top and bottom, and then keep tuning up (including the bottom) til you get the right sound. Only thing I can say is dont tune the top too tight or it'll feel like you're playing on a surface with no give and your fingers will wreck if you hit decently hard for a while.

If it still doesnt work, check the heads. I just had a faulty Remo CS which broke on the bottom before it did on the top. Gave an awful sound and resulted in me breaking my reso skin trying to fix the sound ><
