I need a turntable. Any suggestions for what to look for, or should I just get one of ye olde $90 Circuit City variety? What about garage sale finds, are these things expensive / hard to repair?
Bah, I bought a new one at Best Buy and it works fine... Then again I have 4 ft. tall speakers and a nice reciever.
You may have to clean some things on an old one (like the stylus, which ain't hard), and make sure it will play different speeds and that it will hook into your reciever.
I'm more concerned about replacing a motor or something on a used one. RCA output in a 33/45 selector are obvious requirements.
My receiver sucks, but has RCA inputs. I should really get a new one since it's an Aiwa desktop system from 10 years ago with nonfunctioning CD and tapedecks.
If you can get a new one for $90, do it. As soon as you get a step up in quality from that the price increases by a LOT, and if you're not an audiophile you won't care so much. I'd avoid garage sale stuff for the most part unless it's a very common model because you might have trouble finding new needles and stuff for it and when a new one is $90 it's probably just not worth it.
Yeah I've seen Technics and such go for $500 and would be nice, but is completely unnecessary. That kind of money can go to recording equipment or my car.
