underrated bands, in your opinions

And what does Mikael do? Probably drink all night before a show. I don't really care what any band does before or after a show, as long as they play well. If the vocalist sucks, I don't say "oh i don't mind, he probably had a hard night last night". It's not like Opeth are poor or anything and have to spend the night on the streets. It's all about how they sound on stage.

Well, he probably does that too. But I was more like referring to things like onstage soundbalance and playing and singing at the same time. I believe it's far more difficult than singing and dancing, at least when playing opethkinda stuff.

Metalbands usually have to play in these shitty places with mixer who doesn't know or give a fuck. Yep, even if they're a bigger band like Opeth. Onstage one can't hear oneself or some of the other instruments, maybe not even one's own. It's pretty difficult to stay in key, would be to anyone.

Heya.

Mikael may be a "master of vocal harmonies", but Dan Swano is a "master of production", pity he can't do anything else.
I'm afraid most of the ground you stood on in terms of a debate, hibernal_dream, was lost in this statement, because you took an artist who we all know is successful not only producing records but writing music, playing drums, guitar, bass, keys, and singing not only for himself but other bands as well, and suggesting he is incapable of all of the above excluding production because you apparently just don't like it. You're entitled to an opinion, of course, but don't go imposing it as a fact in a debate and making these grandiose statements off of it, especially when you turn around and say
Whether you like the lyrics or not is entirely up to you, theres no "good" or "bad" lyrics.
implying that Langsuyar's opinions are just that and not to be taken as a qualifier of absolute "good" and "bad", when you've hypocritically already done that yourself.

No one here has attempted to deny that the live vocal performances of, say, N'SYNC sound good (as opposed to Britney Spears, who the one time I heard actually sing live was completely awful). Do they, in fact, sing live? I had thought they might very well LIP SYNC (heh, sorry, had to) onstage, but I honestly don't know. Anyways, people are contesting that they prefer Mike's voice because they simply prefer the way it sounds and the way he uses it as a matter of taste. There are an infinate series of intanglibles to consider, though... N'SYNC may be dancing, but Mike has to perform difficult guitar parts as well. Is it easier to sing solo or with 5 other voices to back you up? Does N'SYNC's music (as fabricated as it may be) allow itself to be easier sung in a live environment than Opeth's? There's the differences in stage production each has available as well, blah blah blah.

Finally,
"if I like it, it's good!"
Very true, and that's the way it should be, for you and everybody.

Finally, I think a lot of those (mostly German/Austrian?) Folk/Metal bands are underrated. Agalloch, Estatic Fear, Empyrium, Tenhi ...although that's only OUTSIDE the bounds of this forum, as they have been well publicized in here...

It is beyond hilarious and pathetic that someone would think that what is most popular is the 'cream of the crop'.. that whatever most people are listening to must be that way because it is the best. This is a completely ignorant ideology only formed by a misinformed teenager or a late developing adult.. I can't even say it in a nicer fashion.

And I won't even begin to address other issues from someone who thinks that Backstreet Boys is superior in ways to Mike or that Dan Swano is only good as a producer. It's almost those posts must have been a joke, because its hard to believe that Opeth now has fans who believe things like this..

ignorance ignorance ignorance... oh well. *last post from me on this thread*

I'm not saying any of those things, although I never liked anything that Dan Swano put out.

Pathetic? I think it's even more pathetic to be on your knees sucking Mikes cock and bowing down to everything he does. I know he hasn't made a wrong step yet, but you have to be critical as wel... If you think that I think everything that's popular it "the cream of the crop" then maybe you should learn how to read.

I get a lot more out of listening to Opeth than BB , but sometimes I wish i WAS a BB fan. Look at it this way: their fans get tours in almost every part of the world, albums released every six months, music videos all over MTV, music on the radio every time I turn it on, appearences in stores and TV shows every day....

But theres no way I would trade my love for Opeth with all that, no matter how "underrated" they are.
