I once listened to a college radio station that played all kinds of alternative. One night I taped a german metal band doing two decidedly operatic numbers.
Their lead was a woman singing as in an opera and in german. This girl had a set of lungs like I've never heard before singing metal. She really could belt and then bite her words in sarcasm. Some of the lyrics were screams, literally. She was operatically trained but talked, sang and spat out an incredible performance.
The guitar work was inventive and well executed. The songs together were about ten minutes total and seemed to be two cuts from the same album. I'm guessing at a doomy forlorn sound from the deths of suffering as to the style of the music.
I've long since lost the tape but not the fondness of her vocals.
This is a long shot: Would anyone have heard anything like that sound coming out of Germany in the eighties?
