Upcoming Opeth record

"I have one epic old-school OPETH song that reminds me of the first two records, with lots of riffs stacked up! I'm really happy with it all. I think we have something big on our hands this time."

My interest has been piqued.

Really though, I will always be highly expectant about new Opeth material, an Opeth year is always an Opeth album of the year for me, although with Tool probably putting something out as well, it'll be a real clash of the titans. I don't give a shit, Heritage is awesome and I'll most likely love whatever they put out cause it'll always be Mikael going nuts. Ain't nothin' better than Mikael goin' nuts.

I'm not worried as much about the music as I am about the production quality. The electric guitars on Heritage sounded so awful.

Well, Heritage sounded good in a way but I would rather like to hear another Bogren-mixed Opeth. I didn't dig that Steven Wilson mix that much.

While we're at it, does anyone have some info about what was used for the heritage guitars?
Really digging the low gain almost blues-ish sound....even though i didn't care for the songs for the most part :/ I mean, it's good stuff, but Opeth was just THE band when it comes to complex chords, weird yet melodic riffing, melancholy/sadness - and mikaels growls are/were top notch!

They would have sounded fine on a full-out prog record IMO, but Heritage still had some pretty heavy parts and they sounded totally out of place in those instances, at least to my ears. The drums seemed weak as well. Nice and organic, but again, sort of out of place.

Akerfeldt is going to produce himself? Isn't this one of the reasons all the deliverance tracks got messed up? I am still meh about heritage. My biggest complaint is that it's very disjointed at times, as if random riffs were just thrown together. You could see that starting to happen on watershed as well. I really love opeth but the days of mikes gnarly growling and morbid angel worship are clearly over.

Think I've read somwhere that it was neck pickups on all guitars, a jcm800 amp for dirty, an old fender for cleans and some old gibson transistor amp

Opeth is basically dead in my book. I could live without the growls (although I do prefer a mix of growls/clean) but their departure in overally style did them in for me. Their albums (pre-Heritage) are still some of my favorite albums of all time and I still listen to them regularly.

I do still respect them. I feel an artist shouldn't have to stick to a particular formula when it no longer excites them or if it's simply expected from the fanbase.

I know, but I don't like it anyway. Maybe it wasn't even his fault, I just think the guitars are way too thin and hollow und the overall sound is a bit limp.

Anyway, can't wait to read who's mixing the new one.

+1, you summed all of my thoughts about Opeth. :/

I actually love that album mix wise. Also, don't know what happened during tracking but Andy only had mono OH to work with. You can hear the cymbals are all centered. It's one of those Andy mixes that don't "glue" as much as the new ones but it's so crystal clear, every single instrument is perfectly balanced imo.

I remember Andy posting something along the lines of Deliverance being basically a salvage-job as the tracking was severly fucked up...mono OHs etc like mentioned above. Hence I think the mix came out fine when put in perspective to what he presumably had to work with :D But obviously he has done better sounding records - mostly the ones he also produced and engineered ;)

Having that said, i really dig what Bogren did on ghost reveries....watershed, not so much :/

I'm not saying that i don't like it, it's just that i don't enjoy it as much as the other records (both production and music actually)...there's something in the guitar sound that i just don't quite get along with. matter of taste, i guess :)

my fave production (next to ghost reveries) is blackwater park, btw. just fits the music really well imho
