I'm gonna be spending some serious bucks pretty soon to help improve my recordings. I just don't know where to put my money. I was considering getting a pair of AKG c414's, but now i am thinking of getting some high quality plugins instead. A buddy of mine suggested the Universal Audio UAD1e, I was also thinking about one of the waves bundles. Any thoughts, or better suggestions? We are running Cubase Studio4.

in order to make an informed decision about what you need to get, you'll have to share A)what you have now, and B)what do you think is the weak point in your recordings??

My friend and I record together so we compile our gear. Between the 2 of us we have a Mackie onyx 1200f (soon) various mics ( Rode k2, sm7b, sm57, i5, c3000 x2 etc...) and more on the way, Mackie 824 monitors, FMR RNC. We are kind of weak in the plugin department, so I was leaning that way.

I'd say the UAD-1 would be a great start, as you really can't go wrong with it.

Like I told your partner, the URS CS Pro would be an awesome addition to the UAD.

On the cheap(er) side, most all of the Voxengo stuff is very cool and well worth the money.

How about a Liquidmix? I just bought one to use on the production I'm working with now (in a studio in Austin, Texas). We just started tracking though so I haven't had that much time to try it out yet, but what I heard I liked!
I especially LOVE having a controller unit, it makes a whole world of difference for me at least.

Apart from that, a good mic pre is never wrong.

I now have three UAD cards and have really enjoyed working with the compressors (1176LN, Fairchild and LA2A) and EQ's (Neve, Pultec).

The downside is that the DSP cards aren't particularly powerful and like a lot of other users, one card isn't enough for my needs. I can get by with two cards and smart use of resources, but FedEx have delivered a third today so I should have more than enough juice. Bloody good sounding plugs despite the lack of DSP power. If you look on the likes of Gearslutz, you can pick up some great deals on used cards that already come with the licensed full versions of the plugs. UAD will transfer ther licenses as well. I just got a $50 voucher from them for a card that I bought 2nd hand....can't complain about that.

I'm also very tempted to shell out for the URS CSP too....

As mentioned on another thread, I've had my issues with Cubase 4, so I've gone back to using Nuendo, but others have the UAD/Cubase 4 setup working. It's probably still worth having a browse around both the cubase and UAD forums first.
