Hi there,

Quick question: Is it possible to record multiple tracks separately into a DAW using a USB audio interface? Because USB mixers can't do this, because of the USB connection...

Thanks in advance!

Yeah you just have to go to your audio driver settings in your saw, make sure you have the right driver and make sure all of the inputs are enabled. Then you just go to the tracks you want to record on, go their inputs and select the sends on each track that you need. Boom live multi tracking :)

Yeah just depends on the capabiltes of the interface. The cheaper A&H Zed mixers for example only give the main stereo out via the USB port, but the more expensive Zed R16/24 give 26 channels in and out over firewire.

USB2 can work at multiple speeds:
Lowspeed=1,5Mbit/s enough to transmit keyboard mouse or joystick data.
Fullspeed=12Mbit/s enough for 4channels at 44,1kHz/24bit + aditional data (midi)
Highspeed=480Mbit/s enough to run multiple digital audio streams in parallel

The actual performance depends on The audio interface itself. Most of USB audio interfaces use Fullspeed, but there is plenty that use highspeed too...

yop... one of limitations of USB2 is that it can transfer data only in one direction at a time. With USB3 they added superspeed=5Gb/s (10x faster) and transfer it both directions at the same time.

One of main limitations of USB is the power. 5V at 150mA DC(or 900mA). That is not enough to power 10xAD-converters with 10 preamps and 10:rofl:A converters. So basically to use Highspeed and superspeed for audio interfaces you will probably need external power. Therefore it is not very practical...

I use to have an edirol m-16dx. It was a usb inteface that could send all channels independently. It was actually quite good...wish I still had it.

Yop.... but as long as we don't have to make our gear DIY out of toiletpaper rolls and spare parts from škoda 120, then everything is OK ...
