Question About USB Hard Drives

I'm looking into external USB hard drives for recording and was wondering whether or not it would affect the performance of my USB interface. It may be a stupid question but I'm not really good with computer concepts.

Don't use USB hard drives for recording. Use Firewire, Thunderbolt, or a second internal drive.
