Hi everybody,
I recently added a gentle hipass filter when reamping :

DAW (McDsp HiPass Filter at 400Hz - a real gentle one though) ---->
Peavey JSX ----> 57's ----> Digi002

and have to admit that with the addition of a second (yet again gentle) hipass filter, I got a really clean and punchy sound.

I would like to know if other people do the same and with what results.

Thanks in advance,
Akarawd

PS. The DI tracks were recorded through a line6 pod xt pro (replaced by an
Avalon after the recordings where well over...) which might be
to blame for the low-end muddiness.

Honestly, for me it's not that there is so much low in the guitar DI track, but usually the amp/cab combo will make things a little too bass heavy. I have done some reamping with an MXR 10-band EQ in the loop with a slope from the 125hz slider down to the 31.25hz with about 1-1.5 db drops per slider. This allows me to keep the amp fairly flat on it's EQ dial - which with my 6505 really helps get the chucky sound, but the pedal just cleans it up a bit for the mic.

What you're saying makes perfect sense and I'm already saving up for a decent outboard Eq but I'm just wondering if that's an intergral part of the recording chain when it comes to recording guitars for all the big cats, you know ?

Cheers,

I`m highpass DI signal when reamping if I record DI with ART Tube MP (it boost lows lower than 40Hz).
If I`m use my ENGL pre as DI-box everything OK without highpass.
But highpass@400Hz... seems strange. How highpass can be gentle?

Hi,

The Sneap preset I guess we all use a lot but getting his awesome tones may involve little bits and pieces we are not aware of. Does he use an eq before the amp ? Sure, the combination of player/instrument/room/amps etc is 95% of the tone but how can it be that only a couple of people come close to his work ? I will keep on trying with this "eq before the amp" practice and as soon as I receive and test the Avalon U5 I'll let you know.

Cheers,

PS. I know 400Hz might sound like a lot but using an extremely smooth (eg. API like) curve before the amp is actually not taking that much away (it does remove everything below 60Hz and cuts gradually into the muddy area).
