Using a physical amp in place of wagner, etc

Can I do this? I remember reading something about using the FX send and running that through a channel with the impulse on it? But I can't seem to find that again.

I know the amp has to be plugged into a cab, at least.

Yeah dude, very simple - plug the FX send output into a "line in" (not inst. in) on your interface, control the volume with the channel volume on your amp, and always keep a cab connected. Some amps send signal through the FX send when the amp is on standby, some allow you to have it fully on but with no sound coming out of the cab cuz of separate master and channel volumes, blah blah blah, search and you shall find!
