Ya know I have never had an album of theirs except for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge which I got for $5.

I do like their older stuff when David was singing too.

So what albums of the Old School should I get?

I agree with DumbAss, all the DLR era albums are worth owning. Imo Van Halen, Van Halen II, Fair Warning, and 1984 are the best albums of that era.

I would agree with most people on this but I also like 5150, the first record with Sammy. They released 'Best of Both Worlds' last year which is a greatest hits thingy which has some good stuff on. Roth is the man!!

Most definitely!

1 - Van Halen I
2 - Fair Warning
3 - Women and Children First
4 - Van Halen II
Then if you really get into those, go pick up "1984".

Van Halen with DLR is timeless!

Van Halen's first record is one of the best records ever made. James Hetfield even put it in his top 5. II has some of their best shit too. I've just bought Diver Down (Remastered); I hadn't listened to it in about 20 years. They were a great fucking rock and roll band and even this record is good. 1984 is one of the best hard rock album of the 1980s, and Fair Warning comes fucking close. Get all of the Roth era records (the remastered versions are fucking amazing) and 5150 and you have Van Halen in a nutshell.

i suggest starting with the self-titled debut.it's amazing! the songs still sound fresh and are better than many out there.considering its from 1978-its way ahead of it's time.van halen 2,women and children first, fair warning and 1984 all next imo.

stick with Van Halen, not Van Hagar.
Van Halen 1 is fucking sick.
Fair Warning after that, then the other DLR albums through 1984.

And listen to DumbAss - think about DLR's Eat 'em and Smile (Stevey Vai and Billy Sheehan!)
