Van Helsing's Curse - Oct. 20-21 in Vegas!

Hey, where were you when I was punching in my credit card number to book at an outrageously priced and inconveniently located Las Vegas establishment? Oh, well...that's good info to have…lesson learned for next time!
You never asked...

I got tix yesterday. The Saturday show does not seem to be selling well, because the girl offered me row F or G... I got M because of it's location. :D Most of that row was available. Now I'm worried they may cancel.

Glad you got a good seat, but that sucks about the ticket sales! I wonder if it would have made a difference if there had been an arrangement with the Hard Rock to block out a few rooms for Friday/Saturday...and make an exception to the "three night minimum" rule to allow ticket holders to book a single night. This is definitely a show worth travelling for, but I was surprised at how booked up (and how expensive) many of the hotels were.

I know there were a few forum folks who attended over the weekend. Following are my ramblings on the performance on Saturday -- I’d love to hear what everyone else thought as well. If anyone is part of the TSO d-group on Yahoo!, I posted similar comments there.

I was actually prepared for this performance to be a bit of a letdown – partly because I knew it wouldn’t feature all the original players, and partly because this is *such* a great CD that I figured it would be quite a challenge to reproduce it in a live setting.

As it turned out, the performance way exceeded my expectations! VHC did “Occulus Infernum” from start to finish, with Dee doing the narration. Instead of getting “O.I. Lite”, which I was afraid of, the music took on a whole extra dimension in a live setting. Dee brought in a whole host of top-notch musicians -- including a 5-piece rock band, a 6-person choir, and Mark Wood (one of my favorite musicians) with his “Nest of Vipers.” :worship: If anyone hasn’t seen a Viper, it’s an electric violin specially designed by Mark himself. The “nest” featured 4 performers on Viper and one on a new contraption called a Cobra (a “Viperized” cello).

Mark has created a contraption that allows the Viper to be self-supporting, so the musician isn’t required to keep one hand on the instrument. The first look at the “Nest of Vipers” made quite an impression: they were all decked out in a Dracula / Bride of Frankenstein sort of motif…with instruments at shoulder level that appeared to be suspended in the air horizontally. Very cool.

The rest of the band members were decked out with wild hair and makeup that definitely fit the Halloween theme. The keyboard player was sitting at a grand piano draped in black, with a cobweb-filled candelabra sitting on top. (I didn’t think from the sound that it was a “real” grand…although it sure looked cool).

The sound was excellent, and I was impressed with every single one of the musicians. The one odd thing was that after “Occulus Infernum” closed, they went right into “Cry Little Sister” from the “Lost Boys” Soundtrack. The performance was fantastic, but it seemed strange that they wouldn’t stop, take a bow, and let the crowd react after finishing “Occulus Infernum”. They also had some weird side show going on during this song with a woman on stage being strapped to a pair of wooden beams. If this had some significance, it was completely lost on me. Maybe they just figured the show needed some gratuitous sex and violence.

After “Cry Little Sister”, they did two additional songs: one number from Mark Wood and his “Nest of Vipers” and an extended version of “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” Both were excellent.

Overall, the crowd didn’t seem to be as appreciative as I would have liked. They only got about half the house on their feet at the conclusion of the show. Maybe folks were waiting to hear some old Dee Snider material, and were disappointed when it didn’t pan out. Hard to say.

Afterwards, the group took a page from TSO and stuck around to sign autographs, which was much appreciated. Dee and his wife were also scheduled to renew their wedding vows later that night at the Hard Rock Hotel, but it was already far past my usual bedtime, so I took a cab back to the Tropicana. (*Not* my favorite hotel in Vegas, but unfortunately, rooms were really hard to come by that weekend.)

Bottom line…if this show comes *anywhere* near you next year, don’t miss out! :headbang:

Oooh, what a great choice!

Yes, it did exceed expectations as far as showmanship and overall sound. It packed a hell of a lot more punch than the album, which I find fairly mediocre. I thought the Hard Rock stage was too crammed for everyone, but they did make good use of the space. I had a lot of fun and only wish they would have played more.

As for the Vegas audience not cheering enough - that's about the norm here. Our crowds suck. That's why I don't believe Dee's dream for putting this on for a month in Vegas every year will ever materialize. We cannot sustain this show. Pity.

I am glad I went.

I have to disagree on the CD. I’m a huge fan of music that combines hard rock and classical elements, and I thought that “Occulus Infernum” was really well done. For me, this was one of those rare CDs that I just couldn’t put away after the first listen. For at least a couple of weeks, I carried it with me everywhere I went, had no desire to listen to anything else, and got separation anxiety if I had to go more than about 30 minutes without hearing it. The only other releases that have done that for me in the last couple of years have been “The First Chapter” from Circus Maximus and “Room V” from Shadow Gallery.

As for the Vegas crowds, I guess y'all are just jaded from having so many fantastic shows to choose from in any given week...

Agreed…it just seemed strange for the band not to stop and take a bow at the conclusion of Occulus Infernum. I just got my “free”** DVD from the 2005 Philly show, and they also went right into another number after "The Curse".

It's not quite like being there in person, but it's a good substitute. The staging/lighting setup was much more elaborate than at the Vegas show.

**Technically not “free” as you have to pay $5 to cover manufacturing and shipping, but I’d say that’s more than fair. I posted a link with details earlier on this thread if anyone is still interested.

I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU ALL IT WOULD ROCK!!!

I totally wish I made it to this show. MOUNTAIN KING! FUCK YEAH!!! But my alternative Friday-Night event was also completely worth it, and I can't complain too much. I'll catch VHC next year, I'm sure of it.

Question... what time did the actual show start for you? Cuz I'm wondering... could I have got back from the Pride Fighting event, and made it to the Hard Rock in time? The event was over by 9:30pm and it was only a 15 minute walk...

It started around 9:15 and went on until about 10:45. Would have missed quite a bit. Sounds like Pride was very good, though. We did have a wee little bit of regret for not going, but anyway...

Kinda sorta wish we'd stayed for the vows renewal, 'cuz Dee said Penn Jillette was to officiate and Penn is always a riot, but waiting for Penn's show at the Rio to finish at 11:30 and for Penn to make his way from there to the Hard Rock on a Saturday night across the Strip... Yeah...
