I'm planning to do a live recording of my band during practice, sync it to video and put it on youtube. What do I need to know in order to not fuck this up? How do you sync the timing, for instance?

you need to know this: no computer is able to properly track audio using a professional DAW (Cubase, PT etc'...) and record video at the same time without fucking at least one of them up.

track with you DAW, shoot with a camera (having audio on the video track will shorten sync time later by about 99%), than when you're done mixing the audio in your DAW sync the stereo mix with the video in a video editing software and mute the videos sound.

done.

You don't necessarily need the clipper, but it can make things easier. Any sound at the beginning, like a 4 count on the hi-hats, can be used. (otherwise synch it up to a crash cymbal hit during the song)
