Slash, the answer to your question is, sadly, no. The Republican Party used to be a great party, full of common sense and a genuine patriotism who truly wanted the best for the entire country and they did a great job before Bush, actually. Sure, there were mistakes made in the past but there were mistakes made on both sides of the aisle, not just from Republicans. What you're seeing now is a reemergence of the Democratic Party; they have since shed their (for the most part) bleeding heart, spineless, "let's play paddycake with our enemies because we are afraid of conflict" image and are now in the best position they've possibly ever been in.
Most people say, "Oh, but Lincoln was a Republican!!!!!!". This is true, but what you don't realize is that in the 19th century, the Republican and Democratic parties were literally switched; the Republicans were Democrats and vice-versa. There's a reason that the South consistently voted Democrat for years...it was known as the "solid South".
Now, as far as people who vote Republican, there are two kinds of people: extreme right-wing neo fascist Bible thumpers who you'd probably recognize in films like Deliverance. Then there are other Republicans who lean more towards the old Republican Party values such as Reagan and even Nixon. Nixon was a good President; he was just an asshole. Even other Republicans didn't like him. The problem with these Republicans is that they are mostly concerned with one thing: MONEY. The Republican Party, whether run by Reagan or Dubya, has always been good to the wealthy. If you are in a position of wealth, then you are going to vote Republican. They can spew all they want about how the Dems are a bunch of Communists and how the founding fathers didn't want what's going on now, blah blah blah, but at the end of the day, their main concern is money. How much money is going to come out of my pocket with these taxes? The only "true" Republicans left, in my opinion, are in the military. They don't make very much money and they don't have a vested interest in their stock portfolio; they are concerned with the welfare and security of our nation and are sworn to defend that and are extremely and even vehemently passionate about it, even to the point of losing sight of what's important. That's their only downfall. Under Dubya, however, that has almost completely changed. I've seen it first-hand.
In short, Republicans these days are idiots. Don't even get me started on college Republicans; those who say they support the war yet have never lifted a finger to help. They don't support the war or the troops, in reality; they support the revenue generated by the war because their families are stockholders in the companies. These, imo, are the most despicable of all Republicans.
