Virtual XI

I completely agree with Mark here. Seeing Adrian on stage with Maiden just confirmed the man is a fucking musical genius. Best guitarist the world will ever see, right down to his awesome on stage robotic moves haha. Janick is just painful to listen to live and for the most part I couldnt even hear his guitar. It was funny during the 2nd melb show, right at the end of hallowed there was a loud feedback sound through the pa and I just turned to a mate and we both went "THEY'VE JUST TURNED JANICK ON" and had a jolly good laugh. No doubting Dave is a good guitarist, but he just plays all over the place, where as Adrians solos are just perfect :D

Also The Lion is a brilliant song, but it's a little too AOR for maiden imo. ASaP was a great aor album, with solos taken straight out of sit-era maiden. Great, great album, far better than anything maiden could ever dream of releasing in the 90s.

I was thinking about it after seeing them...is it perhaps because he doesn't endorse any brands that you don't see as much of him in magazines etc?
Probably - he also doesn't have a marketable 'personality', like Steve Vai or Slash etc. They ooze charisma, but are probably boring, self-involved knobs in person compared to Dave.

Here's a question for any musos: could either of the two Maiden guitarists (ie, not incuding Guitar Hero-level Janick:p) hold their own as players against the 'big' names? Sure, Vai and Satriani may be flashy players, but are they light years ahead of Dave and H like the magazine attentions may suggest?

woah i dunno where to come in here.

H is my all time favourite guitarist and biggest influence on guitar. Davey is right up there as well, along with Roy Z.

I wouldn't say Satriani is "light years" ahead of them... but Vai... maybe. Like, personally i don't dig his music anywhere near as much as i dig Adrian Smith, but purely on a TECHNICAL level, yeah he's definately a few steps ahead. It's the melody and phrasing and just CONNECTING and FEELING IT that i dig about Adrian's playing though... that's a purely subjective thing. I think if you go back in time to the mid-late 80s, the playing on SiT and 7soa7s would have to have been pretty close the cutting edge of technical rock guitar playing, wouldn't it?

the other thing i was gonna say is that i'm giving DoD another chance tonight for some reason. There's a couple of gems on this one but over all... geez i hate to use the words "terrible album" but it's definately still my least favourite.

ALSO i won't hear a bad word about Janick. He's written some awesome songs for Maiden, and i remember when i saw them in 1992 he just blew my mind with awesomeness on stage. His solos are often a bit tasteless live but when he wants to be he can also be super-melodic and tasteful. I think it's probably a fair call to say that when he joined they kinda changed from being a precision heavy metal band to more of a loose rock n roll type band... but you know, at the time all i can remember anyone saying is how much of a kick up the arse he had given them and that they were more awesome than ever.
