Voivod: Kronik
got this cheap the other day, anyone got it?
an interesting cd but theres loads of remixes so can anyone recommend an album consisting of studio produced tracks by this band?

Any Voivod album with Snake on vocals is GREAT!
Can't go wrong, except for maybe that AngelRat CD. That one wasnt so good.

War and Pain

Rrroooaaarrr!

Killing Technology

Dimension Hatross

Nothingface

The Outer Limits

Voivod

Voivod are one of those bands that transcend a genre.

If I were you, and I know I'm not, I'd pick up Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, and Nothingface . . . and listen to them in that order. What this gets you is hearing the band as they grew together and really defined the classic Voivod sound.

I don't feel that Voivod has done anything bad, per se. But Angel Rat, Outer Limits, and the self titled disc from a few years ago all have a different sound. The band mellowed a bit and brought the beast to a more docile state. Now, RROOAARR and War & Pain are the sound of the beast rumbling through your town . . . . very raw production and hungry.

Hope you enjoy . . . hell, let me know what you think of them. I'm interested in anything Voivod.

Voivod - one of Mikael's influences !

I recommend all albums except the first two, so :

Killing Technology - Dimension Hatross - Nothingface (all classics, try picture a mix of King Crimson and thrash metal with a sci-fi imagery approach, and you might have an idea...) The only band I can compare these albums with would be Coroner, incidentally on the same label during the same time period (the Punishment for Decadence, No More Color and Mental Vortex albums find these two bands having a similar approach and evolution... If you don't know Coroner, check them out! The album Grin is also highly recommended!)

And then, 2 criminally underrated albums : Angel Rat and The Outer Limits. 2 albums where they strayed a bit from their original sound and experimented a lot with sounds and songwriting. Angel Rat sounds like Rush in moments, and my all-time favorite Voivod song is found on The Outer Limits, I have named Jack Luminous. A 17 minutes long prog-metal masterpiece, unsurpassed as of yet by ANY band.

The Negatron album saw the band reduced to a trio with a new singer, and even though the album has it's moments, it's probably my least favorite. Phobos, the second album with the trio lineup was much better, in my humble opinion.

The Voivod album saw the return of Snake on vocals and the addition of Jason "Jasonic" Newsted on bass. Very good album, though I find Snake was not in top shape, and Piggy probably not as creative as ever.

One of the only bands from the province of Quebec (Canada) to have a worldly impact, probably my all-time favorite guitarist for his creativity in an age of copycats, R.I.P. Piggy, the metal scene is shattered without you...

:notworthy

Cheers !
