Voivod/Reviews?!

Just wondering if anyone here picked up the New Voivod disc?!
I just got my Revolver Magazine in the mail today & they gave it 4 out 5?! Suprised me. I also saw that there had a 1/2 Hr. special MMUSA'S Uranium on the other day. On the set of the video. Forget what the song's name was. Wasn't very memorable. I'm curious more than anything. Never was a big Voivod fan to begin with, but the involvement of "dogface" has really sparked some interest. Well? Any thoughts?
:p

imo its an awful album
has none of the sci-fi feel, or even relatively innovative guitarings of past albums. Its straight-up rock and roll, barely even metal imo. newstead gave a new meaning to "hype" for this disaster.. hehe. i guess coming from the wonderous creativity that we all know metallica has been these last few years (har har), even THIS seems fresh!

i suggest sampling a song and seeing for yourself. anyone will do! hehe

You must not be into any of their old material .. or have not heard the record. Having listened to them since Rooooaaaarrr ... I can honestly say that this is in the top 3 for Voivod releases.

80% of the tracks are sci-fi themed, so I am not sure where you got that above statement

And if you are basing your opinions based on the 3 song sampler that is also up on mp3.com than you are in for a big surprise. Those are probably the mellowest tracks on the record. Check REACTOR and THE MULTIVERSE for proof of krunch ...

But then again Voivod was always an aquired taste ...

IMHO ... one of the best records of the year so far!

actually dimension hatross and nothingface are my two fave voivod cds.

you may politely roll your eyes back down, as "sci-fi feel" has more to do with the music than with the lyrics. Otherwise any rolling stones song could be sci-fi with the proper word-dressings. "i see a saucer and i want to paint it black" hohoho The music on the new cd has none of the interesting chord phrasings of past work (which is what gave it the sci-fi feel-- the angular, geometric, "strange" guitarwork). I'm not really surprised since they more or less ditched that style after nothingface....

i have sadly heard the entire record. Multiple times-- i dont just write things off, i always try to find something worthwhile in even a loathed release. Especially with voivod! sure, theyre playing with more oomph, but the creativity of hatross and nothingface is gone. All i can say is if you liked angel rat/outer limits voivod, this is like an even MORE simplistic version of that "progressive" rock.

True ... the above records is what it more resembles, but there are tracks such as Divine Sun and Invisible Planet that have the Nothingface feel ...

Voviod never really played traditional metal, except maybe on their first record, so this is a natural progression for them. What I like about it is that it has a kind of youthful energy to it, which was sadly lacking since Nothingface.

With Newstead at the helm, so to speak, he is trying to get them more fans, which they truely deserve and so the record is more accesible than previous ones.

Each song is really memorable and has "oomph" as you said and the production really shines as it never did before. I think the songs will really shine live.
