So I just caught the show at the Starland Ballroom last night and it was excellent. Blackie Lawless brings to the stage his semi autobiographical "Crimson Idol" story (still I think their best album with the self titled) live note for note including all the acoustic intros, interludes, with speaking parts and orchestrations pre recorded.
There was even a video screen playing the short film (showing the events of lead character Jonathan's troubled childhood and his rise and fall from fame)that was originally done for the album's release in 1992 which was perfectly synched up with the band's performance for each song.
Lead guitarist Doug Blair respectfully recreates Bob Kulick’s original parts I’d say 99% the way his recorded them and ensuring he is faithful even plays a double neck to get the full impact of the clean acoustic parts on songs like “The Idol” and “Hold On To My Heart”. Mike Duda is always a ball of energy on the bass and Mike Dupke on drums also stays pretty true to what Frankie Banali originally played on the album.

Setlist:
Titanic Overture
Invisible Boy
Arena Of Pleasure
Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In The New Morgue)
Gypsy Meets The Boy
Dr. Rockter
I Am One
Hold On To My Heart
Great Misconception Of Me

I don't really know their material all that well, but that seems like one real short setlist for a band thats been around for so long

Well you have to figure that playing "The Crimson idol" straight through was an hour itself. Then they took a ten minute break and encores were another fifteen minutes. So it was a long enough set considering they played one entire album.

tis true it's a short set, but for a $15 show, and the fact I haven't seen the band in 22 years, the fact they put their all into it, I was pretty god damn satisfied.

Hell our encore here in Salt Lake was only 3 songs long. So yeah a bit short but *shrug* I had a blast, enjoyed the hell out of it, the crowd was fu**ing going crazy the whole show, so for the price of a film and popcorn I got to have one hell of a night, even if it only had an hour and 20 of music from the headliners.

Especialy when you think you pay premium prices to see groups like Ozzy, etc. who play an hour and a half for $85?

I expect a 90 minute set in ATL-IF they play here.

heh - good luck with those expectations.

and btw, I've already looked into it... they are far above my budget.:ill: And apparently the Masquerade doesn't even want to take a chance on the turnout for a W.A.S.P. show.

*sigh* this is also why we haven't seen Overkill or Metal Church or many other great old school traditional metal bands in ATL for years. :erk:

but back to the subject - Crimson Idol is not my favorite W.A.S.P. album ever. I would rather see a good varied set from their complete catalog vs. a concept set. But that's just me. Glad everyone enjoyed the show who could see them. I know Blackie is one passionate as hell individual when it comes to his music. Well worth the money for this show, no doubt.

Yeah, I checked out the Chicago show. We got The Crimson Idol, and then only three songs for the encore (Love Machine, Wild Child, and Blind in Texas). The band sounded good, but I'm 99% sure the backing vocals were on tape. Fun show with the film on the video screen and all, and probably 200 or so in attendance.

I thought that at first as well.. I payed some close attention and saw most of it was from the basist and some from the lead guitarist (alas Blackie didn't do lead).

Also, in Salt Lake, at least, we didn't get the video screens. I guess the club was just too small for that set up on stage.

W.A.S.P. TO ISSUE RE-RECORDED VERSION OF THE CRIMSON IDOL ALBUM; RE-IDOLIZED 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR ANNOUNCED

"...2017 marks the 25th anniversary of W.A.S.P.’s The Crimson Idol album - a classic that stands the test of that quarter-century, and was heralded at the time by both critics and fans alike. Bringing the album up to date, Blackie Lawless and company will release a new re-recorded version alongside a 50-minute DVD film of the entire story. This will be the latest entry into the W.A.S.P. catalogue since their new album Golgotha in late 2016. W.A.S.P will perform The Crimson Idol in full - accompanied by the film - followed by a second set of hits; the production and performance will be as powerful as fans have come to expect...."

So far, only European dates listed...

Translation: They'll do the album, plus a 2-3 song encore--which will turn out to be a marathon compared to WASP live shows over the last decade or so.
