I like his tom sond on Nemesis alot. It's so clean that i think it's triggers, but they sound too good to be triggers.

Lombardo sounds friggin' massive on those records. I've long suspected he's not triggered on there either- his drums are too natural sounding, to my ears at least. If he's not triggered, those are the best acoustic drum sounds I've heard from a modern heavy band. :notworthy

Solidify sounds just as good, IMHO, though I like the guitar tone on Nemesis a bit more. The Grip Inc. records from Nemesis on sound phenominal. I could listen to them for the engineering alone.

As for Tiamat- thought I've heard it, I don't have Wildhoney, I'll admit. I keep hassling my other guitarist to bring it to practice, but he never remembers. I brought Necrophagist last time! He's got Isis and Old Man's Child coming his way if the Tiamat actually shows...

I don't think the Grip records had triggered toms, either. I think that it'd be a hard sell to Lombardo, too - especially back then.

Yeah those toms are the exact sound I've been searching for. If they're natural they have to be the most perfectly tuned, and perfectly isolated toms i've ever heard. (maybe thet were done "Machine" style?) I've mic'd drums internally, sans resonant head, and still got more bleed than i wanted. I'd love to get my hand on a set of May mics to play with.

Is lombardo against triggers? The snare on "Incorporated" is definately triggered, and I know his kicks were triggered on "The Gathering".

Well I'll guarantee you that they weren't done "Machine style".:)

I don't know if DL is against triggers as a whole, probably not since he's into all kinds of electronica stuff. You just better be a badass producer to try to persuade one of metal's greatest drummers to do it your way.

I only have the first two records. I'll listen to them all the way to the grave.

This thread inspired me to break out my Grip Inc. collection. I was listening to Incorporated on my HD280Pros earlier, and I was surprised by the mastering- it sounds like there's a ton of clipping going on, and it's especially annoying 'cause the recording and the mix are so good. The nylon string and cello sounds on there are great. I suppose that's what we get for it being from 2004 rather than 1998.

I'll give it another listen for the snare sound. I was paying special attention to the kicks, and I still couldn't tell whether they were triggered or not. Granted I wasn't listening to the thrashier tracks at the time, and those are a better indication.

The drum sound on all those albums has puzzled me for a long time. It's so clear and perfect without sounding at all synthetic. I've been listening to a lot of real drum-centric stuff recently- Meshuggah, Grip Inc., Tool- and it's inspired me to work on my drum recording (if not my drumming- I still blow on drums) skills. Plus my current drummer has a nice set of Starclassics and a Tama Bell Brass snare... :heh:
