Waltari sound like what might happen if Joe Satriani smoked alot of crack, had sex with Aha and the ensuing offspring was into technical black metal. There is not much point in reviewing this band as people who listen to them will either love them or hate them. However, with song titles such as 'Let's Puke Together' and 'Sex In The Beergarden', one can get a inkling as to the nature of the songs. The 'problem' is, however irreverent the songs are, these guys are good. Brilliant in fact. No-one here is a slouch on their instruments and at times you might be forgiven for thinking you were listening to a typical prog. band working out with a series of complicated time changes. The production is also spot on, adding a strange ethereal atmosphere that is like the sixth member of the band. The best work on the album is the suite of songs known as 'Cityshamaani' which threatens to tear up every rule book known in metal and write another twisted vision in it's place. After finishing the album I am fairly awestruck. If you can get past some of the silliness, this band will take you to some head fuck places but boy is it worth the trip. My only downer on the thing is whether the music lacks the cohesiveness that truly great bands have; that unknown quantity that allows the audience to immediately tell who they are listening to. Actually, who cares? they have a song about having sex in a beergarden! Beer and sex, what more could you ask for!?
