Warpriest - The Witch

Besides my artwork, I'm also a musician. I've been playing metal for over 20 years now. My first love is the bass, but I also play some guitar and can sing a little. About 17 years ago, I put down my music and got into graphic design and raising my family. A couple of months ago, I decided to dust off my guitar and start playing and recording again. I have the skeleton of a few songs floating around, but decided in the spirit of Halloween, to make this my first song to release. "The Witch" is a song about people who are controlling and has a 4 minute psychedelic inspired solo in the middle. I created a little video to go along with it as well.

The name of this project/band is Warpriest. Most of my lyrics tend to be on the darker side of Christianity with heavy riffs and big drums. If I had to label it, it would probably be doom. I mainly did this for fun and to see if I still had the chops. I hope you guys enjoy it.If you like it, please share, as well as liking my Facebook page, as there will be more to come. Thanks.

I got a few songs that are in a rough mixed stage as well as a bunch of ideas brewing. Here is a sample of three of the songs that are close to being done.

When I played The Witch last week I completely forgot about the thread by the time the song had finished. The main reason for that might be the fact that I was never into doom to begin with so I felt nothing that would hook me back. On an objective note, though, I can compliment your great playing and the lyrical composition. The mix is good, the flow is nice, and the lyrics neatly match the eerie atmosphere. My favorite part was the change of pace at around 4:50

I'd say it's a pretty good effort overall, but like I said I'm not that into doom, so let's just pin the blame on the age gap

Whipmaster sounds pretty sweet, we're nearing that youngin sound

I've been breathing air for approximately 21 years now.

I think it's a shame you won't see much recognition for your work today since the age of doom is a bit behind us. Sure there are people who appreciate your stuff, but it's improbable that they'd be online scouring for new music.

Doom is a weird genre to have mixed with Christian because doom lyrics are usually meant to be depressing n such. But Paramaecium is pretty decent.

I've always heard of Veni Domine as one of the key Christian doom metal bands.
They're also proggy*

They definitely combine more elements than just doom in their music. They are one of my favorite bands (Christian or secular).

Last Chapter is another I've heard called Christian doom metal. They are definitely doom. I haven't delved too much into their lyrics, but I don't think they are not as obviously Christian as some bands. Interestingly, they bring in Rob Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus (not Christian metal) to sing on their album "The Living Waters," which is the reason I bought the album years ago. Those three bands are about the extent of my doom collection.

Good job on your song, prometheus7! Definitely interesting stuff. And your not the only older forum member. I myself used dial up until about 6 years ago.

Interestingly a lot of secular doom bands have Christian lyrics. Listen to this Black Sabbath song:


Trouble is a secular group that blends a lot of Christian imagery, not in a preachy way. Fun Fact: Drummer extraordinaire, Ted Kirkpatrick from Tourniquet played with them.)


Place of Skulls is a Christian made up of Pentagram's Victor Griffin.

Robert, could you share some of your wisdom with us, I'm rather interested in Black Sabbath's story. I've read that Butler and Iommi were both from working class families who had roots in Christianity (denominations unclear) and that Ozzy's a member of the Church of England (?) but some people propagate that they support the opposite. And despite the large number of articles dealing with this topic I can't seem to come to a conclusion as to what they all truly represent. What was the situation like back when magazines covered the music, and not webzines?

The funny thing is, I was never really a fan of Sabbath back in the day. Led Zeppelin was (is) my favorite band. It wasn't till a few years back that I really got into them. From what little I have read, it was more about imagery than anything else. Geezer was deeply into the occult and I believe wrote a lot of they lyrics. If you read them, they aren't so much satanic as talking about doom and gloom (and drugs), and railing against environmental and nuclear dangers.

Funny you should say that, I thought Geezer was the one true religious person of the lot.

Geezer definitley was big into the occult back in the day. But he had an negative experience when daballing in it and hasn't been involved with it for decades.

Not sure...I just see him as an ordinary guy wearing a generic helmet, there's no intimidation factor, y'know?
