Wastefall – Self Exile
Sensory Records - 2006
By Adam McAuley
A varied stylistic treat is given by Wastefall as they display a progressive flavour that grabs your attention. With this band every song differs from the next to create a cornucopia of sounds. At times a straight up metal approach is taken, but at others the outfit goes into all sorts of other styles such as jazz. Whatever the bands throws at you, you’re kept hooked. After starting out somewhat straightforward, the album quickly becomes more compelling as it progresses to a point where you’re left wondering what the band will throw at you next.
A high point with the work is that Wastefall are able to meld in seductive, slower paced moments nicely. “Utopia Fragmented” is one of the most exciting things to be found here although there are many highlights to be found. The band undulates between different types of rhythms quite effectively and is able to throw many different types of things at you. They sound slightly odd, which could be a point to fault them with or perhaps even improve your views on them depending how you look at the overall picture.
Self Exile has enough variety to keep you glued to your seat at all times, it seems. It's a great record which will keep you on the edge of your toes constantly. The ability of the outfit to constantly change things up shows that they’re quite accomplished at getting their stuff across. It seems the band is more interesting when they try to throw in innovative moments than when they keep to a more standard sound, so I hope they pursue this style more in the future.
