I don't have any of there stuff, but Pull Me Under is a great song (and the only song I really know)....I think from the first CD. I saw these guys open for Maiden at a festival in Zurich this past summer. Couldn't really get into it, but Mike Portnoy had the triple bass drum going which was wild to see. I'dd probably get some sort of live CD that covers a lot of the bases. From someone 99% uninformed, I hope this helps.

Dream Theater is not for everyone. Don't even bother if you don't like Prog. Most of the people I know that enjoy dream theater are musicians themselves.

I think that All there records are good, but the highlits are Images and Words, Awake, Scenes From a Memory. The song "A Change of Seasons" is awesome if you have 20 minutes to spare. They are def one of my favorite bands, although, I do understand why some people dislike them so much.

Unless you like pragmatic, contrived, hollow, technicly proficient, crappy (dare I say) "metal" then go ahead. If you like hearing vocal solo's, guitar solo's, drum solo's, bass and keyborad solo's in EVERY song from people who like to show off, then Dream Theatre is something to check out. If you like metal, gut wrenching, head-banging, mosh inducing, go-kill-the-peson-you-hate-most kind of stuff, I suggest looking elsewhere.....

Oh and PS there is hardly ever a bass or drum solo. Keyboard - yeah - sometimes a little over the top.

I'm not intimidated at all (I'm not a musician). They just bore me to tears. More power to your ears if you can stomach them though.

First off, its Dream Theater

Images and words, awake and scenes from a memory are probably my faves.

I recomend Train of thought for you guys though. Its there heviest album and id imagine there most accesable album for fans of pantera and the like. If you like Train of thought then by there more proggy titles....

If you get over I & W and Awake, then you should get in touch with A Change of Seasons. It's a cool disc, their masterpiece epic + great covers. After that it all went downhill (as far as I am concerned).

Totally agree with that mate! Scenes from a memory has a bit to much 'wankery' even by DT standards, but Train of thought has its moments even if theyre more hardcore oriented.

I couldn't agree more!!! I read that case study also I heart(work) that album so much. Quite possibly one of my most listened to albums in my collection.

It does take a certain type though - as I said before, it does not surprise me when people don't like them - I just figured more people on a board like this would.

I know what you mean. I thought there'd be a few more DT fans here than there actually are.

Have you checked out any of their side projects like Liquid Tension Experiment and OSI?

Maiden: Number of the Beast through Somewhere In Time, or if you prefer, Piece of Mind through Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.

I haven't heard Jelly Jam yet, but they're on my list to check out. I heard a little bit of Platypus and it was pretty good too. Planet X (with Derek Sherinian) is awesome. It features Tony MacAlpine and Virgil Donati as well.
