By highest I mean fastest, could perhaps have been more specific there, haha! I find that a faster release works better on my master, but when I put the L1 on my bass I have the slowest release instead. I found that setting more suited for that instrument!

Right. For bass, I like to do maybe 2 comps in series, then a limiter at the end.

First comp has fast attack and semi-fast release, then second comp has slower attack and release to get sustain. Then I limit that bitch (I think I use fastest release so held out notes dont get all aweird and loud) so the meter doesn't move unless the bass stops playing and sticks right around -18db.
