Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don't spend more than you can earn and adults, not children, are in charge.

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife Discretion, his daughter Responsibility, and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on, or make a comment at the very least. If not, do nothing.

Thanks for a pointlessly hyperbolic post with sourceless, nonsensical generalizations and gaping contradictions.

In other words: tl;dr.

Me or OP? I've seen this before, but it's still dumb (not calling OP dumb though!!! just this passage).

Oh shoot, I meant the OP. I mean, I'm kind of amazed that this is just being posted now! The last time I saw it was... 2004? Before that? I have no idea. There are parts that I really disagree with but I won't say anything. :p

Incredibly, I don't remember seeing this. I do admit that some of the stuff mentioned is old (Lady with the McDonald's coffee in New Mexico, for example). But, a lot of it is the uncomfortable truth.

Coffee is not supposed to be served at 150 degrees. That woman needed skin grafts because she got 3rd degree burns on 6% of her skin. McDonalds wouldn't pay her hospital bills; that's why she sued.

Seriously. It's not supposed to be 150 degrees. Who serves coffee at 150 degrees?!

Who is dumb enough to put a flimsy styrofoam coffee cup between their legs while the car is moving?

Most people? I mean, what would happen if you drank a cup of coffee that's 150 degrees? They warn you that it's hot, and that's great, but they shouldn't give you something that will permenantly burn your esophagus.

I'm sorry, but anyone who is going to down coffee directly out of/off of the steamer/carafe at fast food spots, gas stations, and cafes deserves the burn they're going to get on their tongue and esophagus. Her burns were on her legs, because she put the damned cup between them while riding in a car. I've known coffee from fast food places is too hot for the first 5 minutes from the day I started drinking the stuff. It's not a hard concept to grasp and remember to let it cool down. Hell, I have to let the coffee from my personal coffee maker cool down due to the fact that it's flash heated (which means high temps). The only thing that came out of that suit, besides a bloated payout was that they made the "caution hot!" a lot bigger. Which does no one any good because very few people actually read the damned thing (along with signs anywhere else they're put).

Eh.. I still think it's a bid ludicrous that they would serve coffee at 150 degrees. You don't need water to be that hot to make coffee.

Water needs to at least be boiling, even for a french press or turkish drip style, so that's around 100deg, bit higher for espresso due to the steam force. As far as the over-sized carafes, has more to do with trying to make strong enough coffee at great quantities in a short amount of time. The insulation in those things keeps it hot without any cooling mechanisms.

Well, I don't want to argue with you. I just think that giving someone a cup of coffee that can give them 3rd degree burns seems like a bad idea.

I buy coffee from Starbucks and 7-11 that is of a normal temperature. It's hot, but it's not going to destroy my skin if it spills on me. The worst burn I ever got from hot coffee lasted a few hours, and my skin was a little red. Can you imagine having a 3rd degree burn? Needing skin grafts?? I'd like to post a picture of a 3rd degree burn, but it's pretty horrific. Lets just say that liquid that can cause 3rd degree burns, in a coffee cup, is excessive.

That brings up a very important point/question that I am inclined to ask...

Which is more tr00 black metal coffee?

Iced Coffee, as cold as the empty souls haunted by the northern winds... or Hot Coffee, as hot as the inner flames burning in hell?
