I just got a set of Weber Beam Blockers and I have to say that these are awesome for live use.

The problem I've always had is that my amp will sound good when I'm standing right in front of it, or slightly to the side, but the tone turns to a harsh, crackly pile of shit once you're standing about 10 feet in front of it.
This really sucks for you (and your audience) if you have a small practice space and play small shithole venues like I do.
So... I'm a sucker for gadgetry, as it were, so I took the plunge on the Beam Blockers when I stumbled across them on the Weber site. And lo, they work! I can dial in all the high end I want and cut through with no crackly mess. Nice. The SRV duct tape fix is ok (better than nothing), but this is really a much more effective solution.
But for recording they're obviously going to get in the way if you want to close mic right by the dust cap, so you'd have to work out the logistics there. Maybe leave one or both of the bottom speakers open in a 4x12. I have separate cabs for recording and gigging so yay for me.
I actually want to try a condenser in front of the beam blocker now. Hmmm...
