I went to see Lemmy and Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats) last night @ Dante's in Portland, Oregon. Besides getting a rare opportunity to see their side band AKA The Head Cat, which rarely plays outside of L.A. and hearing them play oldies and highlights being versions of Johnny Cash, Cream, Elvis and a Lemmy solo tune (which he said was to be used for his solo album, but he doesn't feel will ever be released). I showed up early for the gig, in fact way early, the doors opened @ 8:00 PM, but no music was even set to begin until 9:45 PM. Get this after a 70 min. drive into the city and lots of Diet Pepsi I had to use the men's room. As I head toward the men's room I went past the bar and the video poker machines. I saw a guy off in a corner talking with one of the waitresses havin' a smoke and a drink, as he played the machine. As I got to the stall I recalled seeing a pair of white boots. Just then it hit me. That couldn't have been Lemmy could it?! I quickly made my deposit and ran out to see for myself. I hung around until the young lady was done speaking with the shadowy figure with the white boots, dressed in black. As I approached there was no doubt it was Lemmy as I noticed the all too familiar Civil War looking hat that he wears and the heavy cloud of smoke surrounding him. Always prepared for a signature I had a sharpie with me. I pulled my ticket stub out and cleared my throat, and said "Welcome back to Portland Lemmy." No knowing what the reaction would be, he swings his stool around and says "Thanks, I'm glad to be back." I was star struck and said "I'm a huge fan Lemmy; I think it's a real treat that you guys are playing here tonight. If it's not a big bother would you mind signing my ticket stub?"
He said "sure." I shot the shit with him for about 10 minutes, mainly asking about the set, what time they were going on and also why they didn't open for Heaven and Hell on the first leg and if they were planning on doing the second leg later in the year? In short, the label didn't get their shit together,
and he hopes to have Motorhead on the road with Heaven and Hell if there is a second leg. He states that nothing was confirmed yet about a second leg....
The only thing that went wrong was the sound man. He fucked up the sound when Slim Jim took over the vocals for The Stray Cat's classic "Rock This Town." We missed an entire verse thanks to that knuckle head....
